NG's Northern Lights AutoFlower, First Grow Ever, Aerogarden Versus Traditional Soil

Welcome to :420: :welcome:

There is a soil fungus that causes what is called “damping off” if the soil is kept too moist around the new stem. Try watering around the plant at least a couple inches away from the stem. The water will form a upside-down cone under the surface, which will moisten the soil under the seedling where you want the roots to grow.

Haha thanks! I tend to read WAY too much about everything I do.

Thanks for the damping off tip. I did some reading and that looks to be exactly what happened. I had some sunflowers experience the same thing too. I changed up my watering strategy midway through growing the seedlings, probably why some were not affected. Thanks for the tip!

As an aside, my jeweler's loupe showed up just now. at 30x and 60x the thrichomes look incredible! And they are still crystal clear so we have some time left. At 49 days I am not surprised. As a new grower I just wanted to be sure since a lot of my white threads are turning brown right now even though I still have newish tiny buds coming in.
Oh, and :thumb: that you know about DLI!

Just in case anyone needed confirmation that my original grow was rootbound.

The first picture is my first seed. It was rootbound and started to flower at 2-3 inches high in a solo cup. (Autoflower) It is over 50 days old, post germination and spent it's first three weeks under a 50W LED/solo cup.

The second picture is about 21 days old and was planted in a 7 gallon pot from the start. No rootboundiness, full room to grow, 100% outside in the Cali sun!

So in less than 5 days we have gone from less than 8 inches to over 12 inches.

Wow, this grows like a... wait for it.... WEED!

I had a small overwatering problem but in triple digit heat it didn't take long for that to resolve itself. It was a little turgid, a little droopy. Less than 12 hours later all is better. I am REALLY excited to see how this thing turns out. If it doubles in size from the time it starts to flower we are looking at 24-36 inches when all is said and done. I know to all you veterans this is nothing but for my first attempt I am pretty pleased thus far.

The original grow I started with in this thread is still chugging along at almost 5 inches high. (hahaha) It has not grown at all. I have been checking the trichomes and I still don't see anything but clear. It has been about 60 days? I am now checking them every few days for "milkiness" to see if I should start harvesting that whole 2-3 grams I am going to get out of it. :p

Ok, this will probably be my last entry in this journal. It really was all about Northern lights and the Aerogarden versus "not". Aerogarden is a no-go in my book. That wasn't even worth it. The "Not" ended up being root-bound in a solo cup.

The whole thing, wait for it...., was a HUGE success.

I truly learned a lot about what NOT to do. I really appreciate all the help you folks have given me.I now have 3 plants ranging from 2-3 feet high and they are flowering REALLY well.

And as an added treat I harvested my re-vegged, rootbound, no-offense-intended-retarded-little-first-attempt at a Northern lights Autoflower.

I ended up trimming it up, washing it, hanging it to dry and then snipping off a fresh little thumbnail to dry in a flame and check out if I was at least a LITTLE successful.

Let me tell you. I am close to retiring age, haven't smoked in at a least 25 years, and that small little bowl I made took me back to 17 years old man.

Pardon for any typos, this stuff is even smooth BEFORE curing. (And yes, I will be curing it properly.) So yeah, good stuff, even before curing.

Oh, and now for the horrible first attempt porn. Hey, at least it smokes well, I may be a wee bit mellowed right now.

I am pretty sure I got a few grams, maybe an 8th, from this gal. I anticipate from the number of buds on the new plants I should get about 2-3 ounces if nothing goes south.

Again, thanks for the help guys. I'll post some growporn when my new batch starts getting ripe!

regards,
FnG

In first

Just a heads up.....cannabis creates a huge odor when growing.......much more than bagged weed does. Some people get away with not filtering the air, but not many. If you have neighbors closer than a few miles, you may want to contain those plants somehow to filter the smell from them.

Just my opinion......

A few miles? Sounds a bit paranoid to me. I thought it was only two plants. I am one of those few who gets away with not filtering the air. Even if it isn't legal, a few miles for two plants seems extreme. Even a few blocks is lengthy. I have plants outside and inside and the outside plants are directly on the other side of a fence running along a sidewalk in my neighborhood. Watch I get a complaint about the odor today...lol

I grow with the aerogarden all the time. I never looked back once I started sprouting in that little machine. The seedling LOVE it. You just dont want the roots to get tangled or too long. I try to remove them just before two weeks. I just took two out today put one in soil and the other in DWC
