, can you see the one in the cheap reflector that's a CFL thats all you need when there that small. Your gonna end up frying them that young I think and it will bring your heat down. The red spectrum will make the stretch that you HPS is putting out. Cheap household bulb buddy will work for now

You can grow it fine with HPS. It works better with MH (Metal Halide) for Veg, but the HPS will work well enough.
Most growers will use T5, T8 or CFLs just for the power savings alone for Veg growth.

400w HPS should be about 12"/30cm away.
600w HPS should be about 18"/45cm away.
1000w HPS should be about 24"/60cm away.
