calyx vs male flower

im in my first grow and I spend more time reading than growing is what it seems like. my oldest plant has developed small ball like things, which is what made me think its automatically male, but the balls are not protruding off of the stem. while reading, it said that the calyx is also a small pod shaped thing. SO what im asking is what are the visual differences between them.

also, ive read about 12/12 from seed but if only veg for like a week and induced the 12/12 light cycle this should create no problem right? i have to be finished up with my plants by a certain date.

The males will have what looks like small bananas at node sites, the will also be faster maturing than females. Pay close attention to lower parts of the plant, they will pop up where you didn't look. As to the schedule light cycle, remember that there are a lot of variations out there, and the best info should come from the seed producer or cloner as to best and quickest way to grow your type...
