Dudes... Is this a ficus or something else?

Had lunch under this tree... In Michigan. The Michigan part is why I'm a little confused:

thick and waxy leaves plus the flower bud resemble something in the magnolia family but I’m pretty far from MI
Yeah, a little...I swear to god if it's just a magnolia I'll feel real dumb. I have a magnolia in the yard and I got all Bear Grylls excited when I found this one in the town. It's right next to the street taco place so maybe I got a little inspired >.> Guess I'll have to go back for more 'research'

Tho my magnolia bloomed months ago. I'll wander out later and compare. I kinda just stop looking at it after it blooms sooo...maybe they're seed pods.

Looks like a magnolia or rhododendron. Hard to tell without it being in flower.
My guess would be the magnolia. Most people keep the smaller rhododendron/azalea species.
They do get a fuzzy pussy willow looking bud on the growth tips.
