Then there's rippers, deer, rippers, a dog peeing on it, rippers, a bad BAD insect infestation, rippers, weather problems devastating it, rippers, freak accident...

Oh yeah, and rippers.

One plant is easier to take care of but it really sucks to have something happen to your only one along the way. Or worse yet, to have taken care of it all through the season and return to cut it down only to find that someone else did it for you the night before.

Most people plant several even if they don't do much (or anything) to care for half of them. There's always that possibility that they'll need them.
