How do u tell if a seed is fertile inside the seed pod?

I understand how to tell if a seed is fertile after it has been cultivated and in my possesion, but how do i tell that the seed will positively be fertile once removed from the seed pod if i can not see what is inside?

Hmmm. I usually look at the color of the seed naked. A nice dark brown color is a good sign that a seed is good. The light colored seeds are immature.

Fat, shiny, dark and or mottled(tiger striped) seeds are your best bet. If you've got a bunch of them dump 'em in a glass of cool water and give them a stir. If they sink they're likely good. Light coloured floaters are good for the birds. They float because they haven't formed inside the shell yet. Dry the good ones right away for storage.
