A 51-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with several drug-related offences after police busted a large-scale marijuana grow op in the city's King Edward area.

Police made the bust in September 2010, but the investigation took time before charges could be laid on Jan. 4.

A commercial property in the 500 block of Berry Street was searched and police found "a large-scale, sophisticated hydroponic marijuana grow operation [that] had the potential to produce approximately 2,000 cannabis marijuana plants," according to police news release.

There were 590 plants taken from the building by the police, who pegged the street value at $663,000.

There was also six kilograms of marijuana shake – loose leaves, seeds and stems – with an estimated value of $15,000.

As well, police seized grow op equipment valued at $10,000 and approximately 62 grams of hash oil with an estimated value of $1,550.

The operation was dismantled and the man has been charged with possession and trafficking as well as failure to comply with conditions from a previous court order.

He has been detained in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
