Nutrient Issues

Hi guys, this is my first grow and my plants are not happy. The bottom leaves are turning pale yellowish whilst the other are getting dead spots on them. Please see the pictures attached. Can anyone offer me some advice?

The pics of my plants are under member galleries. Not too sure how to link it to this post. Its called: Possible nutrient problems.

Your help will be highly appreciated

Re: Nutrient Issues...

Hi, PotaLot :ciao:

Welcome to :420:

Could you give us some more information?

How old are the plants?

Have they been fed any nutrients? If so, what kind and how often?

What kind of water do you use to water them? (tap, distilled, R/O)

What is the pH of your water and nutrients before you water/feed, as well as the run-off after you water/feed?

What kind of soil are you using?

Thank you so much for your response. Let's see -

The bigger plant is about 3 weeks old, the smaller plant with the burn marks is approx 9days old.
I've been feeding them a low value nutrient mix. I bought it from my hydro shop (marked a,b & mpk)
The EC value is now around 1.0.
I use Autopots, so I feed them just enough to get the roots to the bottom of the pot, about 60ml each / day (5 plants).
I only use tap water. As my system grows and develops, I will move over to R/O.
I have been struggling with my pH but it is now around 5,8 - 6. I allow it to move between 5,6 - 6,3. I am scared I might hurt my plants with too much acid.
I added a fan to my grow room and decided to take my carbon filter into the roof, the temp in the room dropped from high 30-C to around 21-C.
I'm using a 50/50 mix of coco peat & vermiculite. A layer of pebbles in the bottom of the pots, with only 2 pots having airdomes installed. The reaponses about them has not offered a clear verdict yet.

I hope this helps. Your advice is highly appreciated
Thanks a mill!!

Thank you all for your help. After reading up some more for possible solutions, I decided to flush my plants. I emptied my nutrients, scrubbed every last item and start all over again. The flushing helps a great deal - my plants new growth went bright green (like its supposed to be. I repositioned my MH, added a fan to the grow room and moved my filter in to the ceiling.

The fresh nutrients have a stable pH (it varies between 5,5 - 6,4), and if need be, I'll adjust it again. My plants seem to be on the road to recovery. I hope the damage is not permanent.....

I think the roots will hit the bottom of the pots soon, then the hand watering will be a thing of the past. i never realised growing your own bud can be so daunting, especially if you don't know too much about growing anything.

Since my last adjustments, the temp has stabilised (now there is an influx of insect I need to control), my plants look happier, pH stable and massive amounts learnt - The learning part I can promise.

Once again - thank you for all your help. It helped me figure out what was wrong. I will keep you posted on the progress. Once the plants have grown a bit & I trimmed off all the dead leaves.

What type of insects? For soil insects I use diatomaceous earth on top of the soil as a barrier, it cuts them as they move through it. I bought my diatomaceous earth from an animal feed store, do not use the type meant for pool filters. Mosquito dunks can also be used as a soil drench for fungus gnats. Sierra Natural Sciences also makes a soil drench called SNS-203 for fungus gnats and other soil insects.

I have used Monterey Garden Insect Spray with Spinosad and Monterey All Natural 3 in 1 Garden Insect Spray to kill spider mites. I add 3-5 drops per gallon of Ivory Liquid Soap as a surfactant to help the spray stick to leaves and stems better. I spray every 3 days alternating the 2 Monterey products for 2 weeks to kill adults and larvae as they hatch. Sierra Natural Sciences also makes 2 products to kill spider mites SNS-217C Concentrate and SNS-209 Systemic Insect Control.
