A Shelbyville preacher was one of several people recently arrested on drug charges as a result of investigations by the county's crime suppression unit.

Dywand Carlos Pettway, 42, of Bird Street, is due in Bedford County General Sessions Court on Jan. 26 on the charge of possession of schedule VI for resale.

During the course of a recent investigation, Pettway and his wife had been pulled over and allegedly found with two clear bags of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana in plain view.

Det. Sgt. David Sakich and Det. Kevin Holton questioned Pettway, who was read his rights and spoke to officers without an attorney present.

Pettway told officers that the two bags in his car did contain marijuana "and he knew it was not a good idea, but he and his wife was having a hard time making ends meet," Holton's report read.

When Holton asked if Pettway was currently employed, he stated that "he was a preacher in Shelbyville." Sheriff's officials confirmed to the T-G that Pettway is a preacher at Vessels Unto Honour Ministries located on Eagle Boulevard.

Holton's report also says that Pettway allegedly told investigators he did not sell the drug all the time, "but would purchase it for friends and family."
