Popped the seeds into a seed starter,watered them and under a 100 watt CFL

I'm the same way, I have a seedling and clone I bout killed, and are just recovering, luckily my first plant came pretty well established. So I out of three ain't bad.

Will be investing in better lighting in the very near future, but for now I'm working with household CFLs. I'm currently working on getting a work from home job going, and until then, my old lady controls the purse strings. Lol. Joys of being a stay at home dad. And your wife being the bread winner. Haha
