Seed temp during shipping

Can the temps affect the quality of the seeds during shipping?
I had problems with germination of seeds I got this summer. They were in a black mail box full sun on a very hot day.
Now I am awaiting more seeds in the mail and its around freezing temps here.
Will either very hot or very cold temps hurt the seeds?

thats actually an amazing question that i haven't seen posted before and could explain certain people's low germ rates while others have no problems with the same breeder/distributor/retailer.

would love to hear more opinions on this!

Nirvana's response

This is an excerpt from the email Nirvana sent me responding to my temp question:

{The temperature could definitely have effect on the seeds. Especially the heat. If the temperature was too high (which was probably the case in the black mailbox) the seeds could be damaged. The cold is not bad. You can store seeds for 3 years in your refridgerator and freezer. A continuous change in temperature will also not be good for the seeds.}

I think this is why I might have had bad germination rates from the Northern Light seeds they sent me.

Radiation of Seed during shipping

another question a bud asked me is; does it harm the seeds when they x-ray or what eve they do to cargo these days for homeland security inspections?
