Investigators this morning remain at the scene of a fire which sent cannabis smoke drifting across Wavertree.

Police and fire crews were sent to a terraced house in Wimbledon Street just after 6pm last night to reports of flames shooting through the roof.

There was also a strong smell of cannabis in the area and police confirmed there was evidence that the property contained a cannabis farm .

Firefighters in an aerial unit pulled tiles off the roof as crews brought the blaze under control by 7pm.

This morning forensics officers and fire investigators were examining the property and the police cannabis dismantling team was also at the scene.

Dozens of neighbors who went out into the street said there was a "strong smell of cannabis in the air".

Some said it was not the first time they had picked up the distinctive scent in the street.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said this morning: "Forensic investigations are ongoing, and our cannabis dismantling team still have some work to do this morning.

"There was considerable fire damage to the property, and a small amount of water from the fire service affected neighboring properties.

"The property has been made safe after Scottish Power, the fire service and Merseyside Police attended.

"The fire service is investigating the fire, but the cause has not yet been determined.

"We've found evidence of a cannabis farm, but it is hard to say its size because of the damage."
