The federal government has started to raid "legal" marijuana dispensaries, beginning with locations in Washington State.

According to Americans For Access, the raids and the investigations leading up to them might have already cost taxpayers more than $12 million.

The raids themselves cost just more than $300,000, but the lengthy investigations cost $12,014,334 according to ASA's calculations. The DEA used 4 percent of its budget on medical cannabis suppression in 2012.

Washington State has been targeted before. In 2011, 14 Seattle-area dispensaries were raided in a similar manner. These raids are surprising considering that support for safe and legal access to medical cannabis is now at 85 percent, the The Weed Blog reported.

The following are some other highlights from the Americans For Access report:

- 34 percent of Americans – more than 107 million people – live in states with medicalCannabis laws. That could increase to at least 39 percent this year.

- More than one million Americans are legally using medical cannabis under their state program.

- Nationwide support of state laws has remained between 70-80 percent for nearly two decades.

- In the last 17 years, the DEA has conducted more than 528 raids – 270 of these have happened under the Obama administration.

- This war is being waged on sick and injured citizens, not drug dealers and profiteers. This report profiles some of the individuals and organizations that are being caught in the crossfire of this war.

- The cost to date of the federal government's war on medical cannabis is nearly half a billion dollars.

- The Obama administration has spent nearly $300 million on enforcement efforts in medical marijuana states

- The Obama administration has outspent the Bush administration by $100 million in just four-and-a-half years.

- In 2011 and 2012 under the Obama administration, DEA spent 4 percent of their budget on medical cannabis cases.

- Without Congressional intervention, the amount of funds spent to undermine state laws will only increase.
