Join the 2L DWC-H Experiment

2L = 2L Soda Bottle
DWC = Deep Water Culture
H = Hempy

The 2L DWC-H setup has evolved in my grow room during the time I was running the 2L SOG (inspired by 420fied) back in Feb 2012. At the time I had some plants 1/2 way through and had to shut down the operation in haste (long story). I could not gather the final data to see if this setup is worth keeping.

This is where I need your help. If you have extra space in your flowering room, give a 2L DWC-H a try to see how effective it is.

Illustrations on how they come together.

Items needed:
- 1L or 2L bottle
- Scissors
- A drill for making holes. If you don't have a drill then a stake knife or a nail will do (heat up the knife/nail).
- Grow medium; works best with Perlite & Vermiculite, Coco Coir. Not sure about hydroton or soil. Feel free to test them out.

Steps:
•Take the bottle and cut in 1/3 off the top (5in down from the cap). You'll be using both pieces. The top to hold the plant above the reservoir, and the bottom is the reservoir.
• Put holes all around the top piece with a hot knife or nail for roots to grow into the reservoir. Remember to save the cap, add some holes in it too.
• Sit the top piece inside the bottom piece upside down like a cone. No need to secure it the weight of the medium & plant will push it down with the help from gravity.
• Make a hole for hempy on the bottom piece (3-4in down from the top). This acts as a "flood control" device, like those in hempy. I wanted the hole to be high enough so the reservoir holds more water, and low enough that the water line does not touch the top piece, to prevent flood and over watering.

At minimal your clone should be cut at 5-6in and root for 2 weeks to allow abundance root mass to develop before going into the 2L DWC-H. The grow medium I've used was 100% coco coir, but you can use anything that suits you.

This is what it looks like.

Best to place these in a tray to catch the run offs. Try not to lift the top piece too often it can dry out the roots. Flush/feed accordingly.

Become the pioneer in this growing method! To sign up let me know what grow medium you will be using and the strain you'll be growing along with a link to your journal, and you're all set. The adventure awaits.

Question/concern? Post them on this blog.

Thank you twelve12. So need a little assistance. Place the clone in the medium, how deep? Water from the top till it comes out the run off hole? And any nutes on the first go or wait till the clones used to the transplant?

I am going to do a white widow in my 5 gallon DWC and a white widow in the 2L DWC. Next to it I'm doing a hempy purple Kush and a 2L DWC purple Kush. Starting in about two hours! Think I should do a seperate journal since my WWs are goin to harvest in two weeks?

Place the clone in the medium, how deep?

Plant it where the medium is just under the fan leaves.

Water from the top till it comes out the run off hole?

Yes, once a day will do.

And any nutes on the first go or wait till the clones used to the transplant?

For clones you want to start off with light nutrient mix.

Think I should do a seperate journal since my WWs are goin to harvest in two weeks?

Yes, seperate journal will keep it fresh.

For the straight hempy one do you know how high up the hole goes and you just feed till it drains out the hole?

Usually 3-4in from the top rim of the bottom piece will do. You can submerge some of the top piece in the reservoir it wouldn't hurt.

How often are you giving nutes in this set up? My Coir order is lost in shipping. Will need to find a better place to order from any suggestions?
Im not waiting on another order since 2 of the plants are ready to transplant. I will just use a panty hose and hope the coir is found.

So- I will be using perlite and verm. mix now. sorry for the inconvience. Please change my medium TY.

seagem they get fresh feeding every other day. I would suggest go to your local store for coco coir. Support them and also you get it faster then waiting for shipment. Just made the update on your medium. Can't wait to see you get started.

BID, I'll add you to the list. I remember you've mentioned about this awhile back when I first introduce the concept in my journal (the last journal). Looking forward to your experiment.

Hey twelve12 do you want to add the second link in my signature instead of my WW journal? A few other things, we are using hydro pH right? How often do we change the res and can you explain the flushing process. I don't really know anything about hydro so I can't bring any knowledge over to these. And do we always top feed them or just till a good root ball comes down? I got a bunch of roots swirling around but only a few sticking down into the res, however, the 2 in the dwc-h look the best out of all my new clones.

teSmp link updated. Thanks for letting me know. Yes, hydro pH 5.5-5.8. Basically, top feed your water/mix (with the correct pH range for hydro) until the medium itself is nice and saturated then let the access drain into the reservoir. Do this daily until you see roots in the reservoir then reduce water/feeding to once every other day. Regardless if you water/feed daily or once every other day, always flush at the end of the week with plain water with correct pH. Flush from the top until you see the bottom reservoir starts to drain itself out. The amount of volume use to flush vary, but I would stick to no more then 2L of water to flush.

Glad to know your clones are doing well in DWC-H.

teSmp Yes, you can dump out the water by hand. Flush 1L or so and dump the new runoff out or leave it in it is up to you, no difference. Then add in your new mix and let it sit.

When I was growing I had over 200 plants and dumping it manually was too much hassle. So I just flush until I see water running off from the hole, then leave it alone the remaining run off would sit in the reservoir until the next day I added in fresh mix. I never had to worry about the reservoir I just water/feed every other day, and flush the last day of the week (Sunday night). Hope that helps.

just a note to every one trying this, i am only doing one plant so i have been manually draining and refiling my reservoir with 1/2 strength nutrient water on a daily basis. I feel like this helps keep everything fresh and wont cause algae, plus it gets oxygen to the roots. Even though i am changing the water out and refiling it everyday they are still drinking alot per day!

Twelvw12,
I want to thank you for all the help you have given me and the forum, I see you everywhere. Took your advise and gave them a healthy meal. I cant reorder until I can get coco. The post office makes you wait before you get a refund. There are no hydro suppliers close to me, My choices are Wichita (63 miles)

Road trip to Wichita after my SS check gets here
