6x90W UFO LED - 2x600W HPS Soil Grow - Medibud - Super Silver Haze - WW

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

Another day, another problem. All is described here, I'll just post a pic to illustrate: Leaves splotching, yellowing between veins

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

Indeed I have. 6-6.5 depending on where I put my probe. Overferting would have caused burned leaf rims and whatnot. No sign of that anywhere. The trouble start in the middle of the leaves, so my guess is it's an overall deficiency in P, K and Mg and whatnot. I'm having a grand time discussing that in the thread linked above. ;D

DAY 54 - CLONE WARS

I decided the plants were big enough to take some clones, and so I did. I bought an "X-Stream Aeroponic Propagagtor" with 36 sites and got to work. You can see the product details here: Propagation

I am posting some pictures to show how I put the kit together. First off, the kit isn't exactly cheap, but it certainly looks made out of el-cheapo compontents. The delivery tube connecting to the pump had lots of flimsy plastic grates and leftovers in it which I carefully removed with the help of a screwdriver and a sharp knife:

Anyhow, it seems to do what it should, namely deliver a constant screen of liquid to the roots-to-be. Some pix:

After putting everything together (the pump is held in place by suction cups and the delivery system fitting into grooves in the container), I pH'd plain tap water with no added nutrients to 5.5 and filled the container with about 15 liters.

A quick test run of the pump left me moist and a happy grower. ;)

I took 24 cuttings overall, 12 Medibud and 12 Super Silver Haze. Since the White Widow is still heavily flowering (doesn't seem to care about 18/6), I decided not to clone her for fear her clones grow up into naughty girls like their mother.

The cuttings (at least two nodes) were taken from the lower parts of the plants, where the prevalence of root hormones is greatest. Some test cuttings were taken from higher places, where the shoots had little light and would not develop into great bud anyway.

I used a sharp, disinfected scalpel, cut at a 45-60% angle just below the lowest leaves, cut these leaves cleanly off the stem and used scarification on the bottom part of the stem. Each cutting was put in CLONEX rooting hormone gel for about 30 seconds, so that the bottom 1-1,5 cm were thickly coated. Then, I put them in their foam collars and put them in the cloner.

Almost done: I misted the leaves with plain tap water, misted the clear dome also to maximise humidity and put it on top of the cloner. The pump is running 24/7, the lamp fixture has 2x75W 6000K CFLs on 18/6.

Btw: don't let the picture fool you, the cuttings are of a lush green colour, not yellow. Shitty cam.

I plan on lifting the dome once a day and spraying the leaves with water. Once a week, I will foliar feed with 1/4 strength nutes.
Does anyone know if pH is important for foliar feeding?

One last look at the rest of the jungle:

Cheers mates!

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

Wow. Nice set up. As far as the foliar feedings, I'm not sure, but I would think that if the roots needed a certain pH level, the whole plant would, you know? Are you planning on using the ScrOG method with the new system?

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

Hmm... kinda makes sense to assume pH is a factor regardless of where the nutrients are taken up.

I'm not planning to scrog this time. It's my first grow, the first batch will be moved to the flower room during the next weeks where they'll be under 2x600W of HPS goodness for the rest of their lifecycle. I also love the ability to easily access and move the plants around; that'd be severely hampered by building a large, immobile SCROG screen (although, of course, I can think of workarounds).

EDIT: I did a quick google and came up with the answer. It is advisable to keep the pH between 6.2 and 7 when foliar feeding. I'll aim for 6.5 to be safe.

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

Okay everyone, who came up with THIS brilliant idea? Routing the electrical ground via the mounting when you have a perfectly fine three-pin-plug?

Goddammit, secretjardin, y u do? I touch my CFL mountings and BZZZZT!

Okay, stupid me for using metal chains without properly looking at the fixtures, but this is not the first time I used comparable products. No-one else had this stupid idea!

EDIT: Of course the input power is properly grounded... dammit!

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

That makes little sense, maybe ground them all together? Idk why they'd go for something that isn't industry standard.

Grow looks good dude.

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

Okay, I did not die from the crazy wiring on those CFL fixtures. Instead, I continued taking further clones on the same day the others were taken and put them into the cloner.

3 days later, I now have 12 Super Silver Haze and 34 MediBud clones in my aeroponic cloner. I raise the humidity dome once a day and spray down all the leaves with water pH'd to ~6.5. That's it.

The first signs of "root bumps" are forming on some of the stems. Too tiny for the camera's focus, but I can see them with my naked eye. Yesssss! :) Most of the leaves are looking very well, but some on the larger clones are drooping, as expected.

I now have 13 plants in veg and 36 clones (minus those that may fail) developing roots, I'm afraid I'll have to get some more pots... >.<

I am also afraid I'll have to speed up my schedule for finishing the flower room as those sativas are really growing like weed(s).

All veg plants got a full nute watering today, some obsolete undergrowth weeded out and not a single bug was found. Good, good...

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

Well, that depends on how long the currently vegging plants will take till harvest. If the clones get too big, I'll counteract with LST - the pots already have practical holes on the top to attach strings and wires to.

I have no experience how long SSH and MediBud take to fully mature. I'll dump them in the flowering room soon and just let them do what they want... ;)

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

Clone Wars, Day 5

As expected, the root bumps have developed on a lot of stems. Some foliage is turning yellowish, so today, I foliar fed all clones with 1/2 strength nutes to help pass the time until the roots are developed enough to start adding nutes to the hydro solution.

Root bump porn, rare stuff on the interwebz:

Everything seems to go according to plan. I really gotta get a move on with light proofing and exhausting the flower room, as the first vegetative plants are old enough to be put into flowering.

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

I finally found the time to complete the exhaust setup. Using hooks drilled into the ceiling and some heavy-duty string, I was able to hoist the carbon filter (1000 m^3 / h) up to the ceiling and push it through a hole cut into the reflective foil that separates both rooms. I'll light-proof the construction with some reflective tape.

As you can see, this allows me to exhaust both rooms with just one carbon filter. Pretty nifty, eh? ;)

All that is left now is the intake fan - I've been looking at a couple of products and will buy a silent model with about 250 m^3/h on Monday, bearing in mind that I want to maintain a negative room pressure for odor control. The fan will supply both veg and flower room.

In the flower room, I'll add a green ceiling light so that I can work during lights off without disturbing the plants.

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

Quite innovative. I like the negative pressure idea, thus keeping a constant draw through the filtration system. How are the LEDs holding up?

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

Thanks, the LEDs seem to be doing their bit right now. Don't know if I'm gonna recommend them, though. The footprint is just about enough for one plant, since the diodes have a very narrow focus. 90x1 W isn't exactly overkill for one light, but I didn't pay an arm and a leg for them, so I'm okay with the results.

I'm definitely waiting before investing into more LEDs, though. In the mean time, I have all the light I need for my veg room. Next week is gonna see lots of plants moving to the flower room and clones taking their place.

Re: 6x90W UFO LED / 2x600W HPS soil grow: Medibud, Super Silver Haze + WW

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for one? Did you say you're running a HID light as well? Did you see a huge jump in your utility costs?
