You can sprinkle some cinnamon on your soil, so far it has worked well for me.

You might just want to stop over watering if your getting fungus gnats all the time my friend, its only caused by the soil being to wet nothing else. They are the little black/dark brown bugs you may see in a indoor garden. If you really want to see what they look like, take a cup of store bought soil, place it in a cup and water regularly keeping it moist and they will appear out of thin air. They live in the dirt and are in all dirt, unless you cook your dirt to sterilize it.

How do you stop from getting fungus gnats with soil being so wet all the time ?
One quart h2o (I use tap), One cap of Hydrogen Peroxide, & a small drop of liquid Dish detergent > put in a spray bottle > Shake well > Spray the leafs & medium generously once a day for 3 days > Gnats & Larva gone. I guarantee it...

For soil insects I use diatomaceous earth on top of the soil as a barrier, it cuts them as they move through it. I bought my diatomaceous earth from an animal feed store, do not use the type meant for pool filters. Mosquito dunks can also be used as a soil drench for fungus gnats. Sierra Natural Sciences also makes a soil drench called SNS-203 for fungus gnats and other soil insects.

While I love all of the suggestions and advice both sound and some that are some what questionable, my original question was aimed at the journal authors method of growing, nothing that he is doing wrong or whatever.

I always get bugs when there is wet soil, so I don't let the soil stay wet. I noticed this method involves wet soil and I wondered how DC kept from having the gnats that always end up in my garden if I over water. Fungus gnats will kill your crop ever so slowly.

Very nice setup DC, I just went back thru the journal. Love it +reps for sure and whats up with the garden atm ?

His status is showing as On Vacation, which may translate to being in timeout.

OH. Was he not playing well with others ? Bummer I was looking forward to seeing the stellar results from DC. Had some momentum when the journal started.
