I found a thread a while back that showed how to find out what size a pot is(I.e. 1gal 2.5gal etc) .. anyone know where this is located or can maybe help me out.. I'm thinking that it would be simply finding the volume but just wanna make sure I'm correct.. the dimensions of the pot are 12" round by 8" tall.. thanks in advance

Depending on the side shape if it is slimmer at the bottom, sounds like a 5 gallon (max) pot.

Wouldn't I use the formula for finding the volume of a cylinder?

if it is cylinder shaped yes. If the pot is cone shaped, then you need to have that in mind while counting.

4" pot= pint (0.5 quart)
5-6" pot = quart (0.25 gallon)
7-8" pot= 1 gallon
8.5" pot = 2 gallon
10" pot = 3 gallon
12" pot = 5 gallon
14" pot= 7 gallon
16" pot= 10 gallon
18" pot = 15 gallon
24" pot = 25 gal
30" pot= 30 gal

Line your pot with plastic to plug holes and add known amounts of water til full, this is the no math method.
Volume of a truncated cone = πH(A^2 + AB + B^2)/3 should work for any pot, where a and b are the top and bottom radii and h is the height.

Assuming you want the volume all the way to the top of the 8" - it holds 2.77390 gals.
