Robbie B's 5th Grow

This week and the following 2 weeks (wks 4, 5 & 6 of flower) are high bud forming weeks so I'm doing 2 feeds on some days. These are 2 half feeds so you don't get a lot (any) runoff in the first one as each plant is only getting 1.67L (8.3% of pot volume). In the last few days I have been feeding the second feed just before lights out, which after doing additional reading on the interwebs, was a stupid idea -
for many reasons. So I'm going to try the second feed mid way through the plant's day. This is more difficult because it competes with my sleep so we'll see how we go with that.

Pics in a few hours.

So here's a different perspective. Trichome development in week 4 of flower. Mostly clear as expected. Note it's REALLY hard to get a good shot in focus with a 1000x microscope when you're taking the shot on the tree! Usually I inspect by video but I won't bore you with 45 seconds of fuzzy shit - even if the 15seconds of wow is pretty good haha.

I can't believe I'm nearly half way through flower already. Time is going fast. The girls are looking good though. They are a bit leafy but I'm leaving the leaves on mainly for this one. Grow #6 (next) I'll either do the same, or take leaves off - depends on how things go.

Definitely going to scrog from now on. Lots of work in the initial 3-4 weeks, but the coverage on the net is amazing. More buds than I can count. Significantly more than I've had when just growing the plants freely.

I took a few photos of the girls tonight. We are currently in Week 5 of flower. Half way there basically (9 wk period).

This is the largest bud. Hard to get to to control but she's away from the main light a bit.

This is the same bud as per the previous "One to Watch" bud

Made some oil today and have some stats for you. Unfortunately I can't give you a reliable yield as I overcooked the oil in the still :( Shit. VERY easy to do.

I use Ethanol >99% pure.

Wt of material 200g {leaf practice}
Ethanol (in) 2.672L {Mixes with the material}
Ethanol required 1.34 L/100g of material

Ethanol (out) 2.103 L {Amount I get after straining the material after mixing}
Ethanol lost in material 0.569 L (21.3%) {1}
Still recycled Ethanol 1.227 L of reclaimed ethanol (45.9%) {2}
Ethanol lost after stilling 0.876 L of ethanol lost or boiled off (32.8%) {3}

{1} Going to build a better clamp thing to extract the most from the wet leaves
{2} Had i not buggered it by overheating the oil, the % reclaimed alcohol would be 71.2% of the original amount added
{3} Had i not buggered it by overheating the oil, the % lost after stilling would be 7.5%

The target Ethanol loss rate (total) is 20% comprising 12.5% lost in material and 7.5% lost in the final cook.

The oil is crazy good btw :)

I'm now in week 6 of flower. A typical thing about being in week 6 is that the plant will cut down on food intake, particularly N. Over the last few days, I've noticed outflow EC creeping up and yesterday and today the value had hit >4 - which is waaaayyy too high. Also, outflow pH seems to be dropping slightly from a steady 5.7 - 5.8 to 5.6. I have been feeding with in inflow of 2 EC and pH of about 5.8 to 5.9 so the drop means something, particularly in combo with the high runoff EC.

So tonight I gave them a low EC (1.4), pH5.8 flush feed which is basically a 90% runoff situation. I kept up concentrations of PK and Zym and had quarter strength A&B. I also added silica to bring the pH up a bit. This was my observation last time I added silica.

Measuring outflow EC and pH is kind of like have an EGT (exhaust gas temperature) gauge in your car. When the EGT's are hot, that means you're pushing too hard and if you don't back off, your engine will get hot and probably die. So if you pay attention to the outflows, you can get a feel of what the plant will be doing in the next few days.

Updated the grow plan again FYI. Much easier to read at 200% ;)

Changes: Added more detail; CO2 strategy (more on that later); reduced A&B in final weeks; updated final organic nutrient mix

Hi All

Thanks to a friend of mine, I have new pictures and a video.

Beginning of week seven. Three weeks to go!

Video time first. This video (and pictures following) was taken just before lights on. The HPS is too powerful for the flash on the camera so to get an accurate picture of colour, we did it at night (10min before lights on). Normally when accessing at night, I just use the green LED's which are quite clear in the video - particularly the bottom level ones. You can also see the new sprinklers I've put in for those occasions where I'm feelin too lazy to hand water. Nearly all ok - just one to mess with to get right.

Here is a chart of how inflow and outflow EC has been up to this point of the grow (since 12/12). Hopefully I'll be able provide another chart later at the end of the process.
