It is a varied word. That’s kinda my thing. If we had a more specific or absolute term.

Unlike varieties, cultivars can only exist in "cultivation." This means that plant breeders or propagators created them and may or may not be reproduced from seed.
im sorry, i tried to take a soft approach, i know it is a stigmatizing topic..we technically can't call them all cultivars, so we can't use cultivar. We cant call landraces cultivars, can we? Cuz they are not/have not been cultivated by humans, but we could call them strains.

the word also means: to filter… as in strain the potatoes- but yeah ditto, the use of the word strain in relation to our crop will only increase with time
