Been lost for a while so I did not get back on this till now. Coir is like a sponge. If you pack it you can get a lot in the pot but you lose the air space. There are a lot of coir products out there with different properties. If you can get one where most of the fines have been removed (particles 0.5 mm and under) it can be used without any perlite or clay and still water it several times a day. But I would not pack it because you lose the air space.
