Not sure what pine straw is referring to but needles, pine bark, pine mulch are all terrible mulch for most plants. Ever notice there are no plants growing near pines, not even grass? Most all mulch is acidic but pine takes it to the level of being a defense strategy. It taints the soil to prevent competition. Good weed barrier placed around evergreens because nothing else can grow in the low PH.
Make my own compost and the creepy crawlies will have this pile turned into black gold by mid October. Avoid putting conifer material into it as they are acidic and would not think pine needles would be a good mulch for your plants, blueberries and azaleas yes. Have never used mulch but suppose it can have merit for some applications.
I use mulch for water retention because the soil on my property sucks, and it was easier for me to use containers. My plants are in 45 gallon grow pots.
