Police officers discovered a living room had been converted into an indoor garden during a drugs raid in the city today.
A team of eight officers smashed down the door of a rented property in Lawn Avenue, Dogsthorpe, at 7am, and discovered that the floor of the front room was covered wall-to-wall in soil.

Police said, in total, cannabis plants with an estimated street value of £50,000 were seized.

They added that, upstairs, each of the three bedrooms of the semi-detached home were filled with 4ft-high cannabis plants, while silver ventilation pipes had been rigged up through the entire house to enable the cannabis crop to flourish.

Officers also recovered UV lights, worth about £2,000.
The house was empty when police swooped and there were no arrests made.

The raid was part of Operation Keymer, a crackdown on cannabis factories, which has seen cannabis worth nearly £3 million seized in the past two months.

Detective Constable Shanie Nayar, who led the raid, said: "I've never seen a room covered in soil like that.

"I think they have emptied all the pots and were going to reuse the soil and fertiliser for the next crop.

"This was a very professional, commercial set-up – the first thing they did was bypass the electricity meter and go direct to the mains.

"It's the same type of operation as the other raids we've made recently, and there would normally be two people tending the crop."
