Tape instead of insect strips?

I love the idea of insect strips... I just hate the reality of them. They're way beyond sticky and I usually make a mess with them in various creative ways.
Anyone ever tried plain old masking tape?
I made a few loops of masking tape with the sticky side facing outwards and put them on top of the soil in my indoor grow containers.
I seem to have forgotten the "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" idea and Mother Nature is currently giving me a reminder. I have many other fixes in the works, but I can't help but wonder if my tape loops will catch a spider mite or two.... or perhaps a bazillion.

I've not seen one bug attached to the tape. Seems quite useless.

Try the little yellow sticky traps. I hang em under the canopy like Christmas ornaments

First, the yellow sticky traps are better for gnats, than for spider mites, and second, this thread is from 2014 so I doubt they are still having that problem

That said the rolled up masking tape makes for a great bud defuzzer if you have pet hair issues.
