This year’s WAMMfest will be absolutely smoke-free, despite efforts by organizers to set up tents for medical marijuana users. The problem is not drug use itself. That has not been a problem in years for the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana. Rather, it is the new anti-smoking laws passed by the city just a few weeks ago. The new ordinances prohibit smoking in all public parks. Though the event organizers wrote a letter to the city, asking that two special tents be set up so that people needing marijuana for medical conditions could slip away for a smoke, they failed to address it to any particular council member, so that their request never made it to City Hall’s agenda.
Because the ban does not go into full effect for another two weeks, smokers could smoke on the sidewalk outside the park. The police however have stated that anyone violating no-smoking rules will be issued a citation if they see the park’s own no-smoking rules broken.
