A Vermont woman is facing up to 15 years and a fine of up to $500,000 for possession of more than 10 pounds of marijuana.

Judith Elford, 44, of Hardwick, pleaded not guilty to the felony charge earlier this month.

The charge stems from an incident on Feb. 7, after police, working with a cooperating individual, met with Elford to purchase the drug.

According to the affidavit, a member of the Vermont Drug Task Force and the CI met with Elford at the Hannaford parking lot along Putney Road in Brattleboro at about 2:19 p.m.

The undercover officer was instructed to purchase 20 pounds of marijuana, valued at about $65,000 or $3,200 a pound, from Elford who allegedly had different "grades" of the drug vacuum-sealed inside teddy bears. She was arrested shortly after.

After obtaining a search warrant, investigators looked through Elford's car and found five cardboard boxes with stuffed animals, a dog bed and pillows, which had approximately 20 pounds of marijuana.

Elford may also be facing charges in other counties after police searched her residence in her name in Walden.

Police said during the search that 2.7 pounds of marijuana, a digital scale, plastic bags, shipping receipts and $4,650 in cash were taken as evidence.
