I just open the jar, fan it with the lid, shake the buds loose, the close.

Hi Ray and welcome to the forum!
Having a little hygrometer that can fit down into the jar will help you determine this better than anything else. You burp in order to get the buds down to the curing range, of 59-65% relative humidity. After you get down into the cure range, you burp less often, now only to release built up gasses rather than to vent off excess humidity. The goal is to keep your buds in that cure range for as long as you can manage.
So if your buds are wet, between 66-70 % RH, that is when I would take them out of the jar and lay them out for a couple of hours so as to dry out a little more, and then I would jar them up for a couple of hours and see what the humidity as fallen down to as a result of that drying.
