Drugs Factory Found On Millionaires' Row

UK - It was once the palatial home of a millionaire, set in acres of land along a road more readily associated with its highflying footballer and actor residents.

But more than 50 officers smashed through the wrought iron gates before making their way across the sweeping drive to uncover the latest property to be transformed into a cannabis factory.

While residential houses along quiet suburban streets and more recently, large industrial premises have been favoured by gangs behind the hundreds of similar operations discovered in the region, yesterday’s discovery represented an unprecedented choice of setting. The rented seven-bedroom house in Roman Road, Little Aston, on the Staffordshire and Walsall border, was secretly rigged up with a network of sophisticated equipment to produce hundreds of cannabis plants inside at least three rooms before police swooped.

The illegal operation was kept hidden from neighbours with former England and Wolves manager Graham Taylor and double Laurence Olivier Award winning actor and Waking the Dead star Trevor Eve among those who live in the area.

But following tip-offs from members of the public, officers burst into the home near the Hardwick Road and Streetly Lane roundabout, before recovering hydroponics and electrical equipment and arresting three people.

The raid was carried out alongside seven other drugs-busts undertaken in the Caldmore and Park Hall areas of Walsall yesterday. In total more than 1,000 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of £250,000 were recovered. Also £50,000 in cash was found.

Overall 17 people, five women and 12 men, believed to be mainly of Vietnamese nationality, were taken into custody for questioning on suspicion of conspiracy to cultivate and supply a controlled drug.

Pc Stacey Paterson, from the pro-active unit at West Midlands Police, said at least three of the properties were used as cannabis factories.

“This operation was carried out in response to local public concerns about drugs and should send a clear message that this illegal activity will not be tolerated,” she said.

Little Aston Park is built around the historic Roman Road and the area is often referred to as ‘Millionaire’s Row’.

Among those to have lived in the neighbourhood are former Manchester United keeper Peter Schmeichel and ex-Aston Villa defender Ugo Ehiogu.

This in an unfortunate situation. The people growing the pot are most likely "slaves" which the criminal organization brought into the country. Operations like this should be shut down...Another reason for the legalization of pot.
