Pruning

I grow all sorts of strains. A 100+ day sativa will be a big yielder. Will it out yield a SOG?

I've never grown for yields.

Topping well you're just stressing the plant beyond anything that is remotely normal.

Apical Meristem - there are 2

Root Apical Meristem

Shoot Apical Meristem

What are their functions?

Never mind just cut them off. <-- that's me joking.

If you read up on what they are, you're "topping" is actually achieving the opposite of your intended purpose.

All I'm saying is, know the purpose of what you do in the garden (in life is good too).

That and I'm not saying not to top plants but its not something we should be doing as a regular process. So why I asked about the reasons when people say they want to top plants. IF its yields and that answer seems to be at the top of the answer pool, I respectfully disagree.

Id respectively disagree.

Again, yeild is a subjective term. I top like crazy then scrog. I’ll get multiple 9 to 12 inch “colas” and virtually zero popcorn.

The taller a plant, the more popcorn when growing indoors. Multiple shorter colas simply get more light to the bud sites.

All good - "popcorn" depends on your lighting. I get great weed all the way down my plants just lower flowers are smaller. That doesn't make them less potent.

Potency isn't a matter of location its a matter of genetics. Same with size of colas. There's tons of middies grown out on 2' long donkeys. Just sayin...

Yield can be calculated with science like math, a scale and a calendar. That's not subjective.

You can VEG a plant for 6 months and out yield one of my plants that only took me 4 months from start to harvest. Does that give you better yields? In that space that you scrog I can grow 4 plants in that 4 month time frame. At the same time have 4 more clones going in VEG so next round only takes me 2 months if that. See where I'm going?
