I've been researching various brands and what not, but I was wondering if anyone has any specific success or gotchas from an HID light setup for a grow tent that is 2'x4' and 8' tall? I've got a 6 bulb T5 light right now that just ins't strong enough and need to get something quick - i'm headed to the hydro store tomorrow... I have a budget of $400...

I'll only need light for two plants or one scrogged...

thanks in advance for any help!!

If you're going hps, I think 600 would fit that nicely. 1000 might hear that space up quick, but would probably work with 8 feet tall. Have good ventilation ready to be hooked up to it

thanks for the advice... i've been back and forth between 400 and 600... i was worried about how much heat the 600 would put out... the tent is in an attached garage that faces north so it doesn't get too hot in the summer.

I would get a dimmable 600. Or a dimmable 1000. So when you move up you ain't got to buy a new light. I grew this plants in a 2x4 with a 400hps.

2x600w HPS. Might go a little over the $400 budget w/ a tube or cool hood but would be best for maximum yield. I have a 2'x5' area and wish I had gone with 2x600w. Ran a 1000w in it for a long time. I think 400w is not nearly enough for that size.

He needs to fill a 2x4 dude. Even if he's budget was higher, 2, 600w would be too much for that little space.
1 600w is perfect for your 4x4 nightOWL. I would buy a 1000W dimmable ballast, specially the Phantom because you could dim it down to 750, 600w. You can get a brand new for about $225 free shipping Hydrofarm Phantom II 2 1000 w E Ballast 120 240V HPS MH Digital Dimmable | eBay
I would recommend a 6" blockbuster $165 free shipping Blockbuster Reflector 6 inch Air Cool Free Shipping Hood | eBay
1000w HPS Hortilux $62.68 free shipping Eye Hortilux 1000W Enhanced Super HPS Grow Light Bulb Lamp Watt | eBay
Total of $452, but you would have a top of the line products to work with, and the inline fan I would buy used on craigslist.
Peace

thanks for the advice... i ended up going with a 600w with a dimmable ballast. but since this post I moved up to a 4'x4' tent and it's made a WORLD of difference... I just couldn't keep the heat down in my 2'x4'.
