So the question is -how many times can you top a plant?. You can top it as many times as you want. It just keeps getting bushier. Usually topping them twice is enough to get as many branches as you want.

Scrog is different than topping.

Technically, you can top your plants many times - if you do it properly - although there is some controversy over how productive a plant will be after you top it a certain number of times. A handful of times is generally considered safe, some might say you can top as many times as you want to. Just depends on who you talk to.

In a scrog (or, screen of green), which is a variation of a method called sog (Sea of green), you don't necessarily even have to top the plant ever.
