If the split is left to air longer than it takes to go grab a wire/velcro/glue/tape, it's probably too late to fuse the split. I've never seen a fused split besides that wood glue hack.
The opening will callous and the branches will continue growing just fine, albeit with less structural support. IMO you don't need tape or anything just let the wound breath and insert stakes for artificial support.
Train earlier next time as you guessed.
