Untchbl's 1st Grow: Soil, Magic Beans Dark Sky, Jinx Proof Legit, CMH

Hi 420 Magazine -

I'm going to start a journal here in an effort to hold myself accountable to recording what it is I'm doing and learning along the way. The reason for diving into the hobby you ask? Oklahoma medical flower is far from consistent or reasonably priced. If I could produce a pound of top shelf flower every 3-4 months I'd be a very happy guy and save a significant amount of money. I like gadgets. I have always enjoyed gardening. I like science! Yeah.... I think that covers it.

Here's the set-up:
  • 30"X60"X80" Tent
  • 1 NanoLux 315 CMH
  • Up-stairs spare room that is temp controlled and ranges from 68 at night to mid 70's during the day (not sure what it's going to do this winter)
  • 4" exhaust setup that goes out a window that will be soon upgraded (trying to decide on fan and size)
  • Soil (but open to recommendations) everything is in Happy Frog now in solo cups
  • I was sold the equivalent of the GH Go Box + Ful-Power (Still wrapping my head around the notes and supliments)
I'm planning to grow 4-6 plants in 3 or 5 gallon pots and use the remainder of the tent space for fans/humidifiers/working space/seedlings etc...

On 9/25 I placed 4 Magic Beans Genetics Dark Sky's and 4 Jinx Proof Legits in rapid rooters under the dome in a dark cabinet. All 8 germed in 24 hours

9/27 All germed seeds were moved from the rapid rooters to solo cups full of plain Happy Frog (rookie mistake, I didn't have the seeds deep enough in the rooters and the tap roots pushed them out).

9/29 All seeds have emerged from the soil. Only watering medium used so far is bottled spring water in a spray bottle. Temp under the dome in the tent is high 80's and RH is north of 70%. The light is about 3 feet away.

Thinking I'll likely keep them under the dome in the tent until I have a first set of leaves on every seedling......

I'm excited for this new hobby and journey and invite any and all feedback/advice/coaching.

You "might" find that you need more light, at least for flowering purposes, both because that's 12½ square feet and because of the relatively extreme shape of that area (in other words, fully twice as wide as it is deep, which is more conducive to using two light sources).

Good luck with your grow!

You think that's the case even with just using about a 3X3ish area?

Here’s where we are at 5 days from wetting the beans down! 100% germination!

The 2 gallon pot has a test bag seed I popped while building the setup and getting everything dialed in. No nutes and just water so far. She seems happy.

Definitely not, if you can keep all those photons within that 3'x3' area. Of course... It's been my experience that trying to herd photons is somewhat comparable to trying to herd cats, lol. Little buggers just won't stay where you tell them to, they like to go exploring any open space. . . .

I could always hang another one of these in the tent or have something else on the other side I guess.... I see what you are saying about the photons not having a wall to bounce off of to the right side of the tent.

10 days above ground for the solo cups. They got their first full watering with PH’ed RO water and a little Recharge yesterday.

The 2 gallon pot is a bag seed that I’m just testing as I learn. I’ll likely toss it for it likely being an hermi. Topped it on Saturday between the 4th and 5th node and it was it’s first feeding with the full GO line, Recharge, and a little Ful-Power. Should I start some LST on this one?

They are all reaching for the light, thinking I might move it closer?

Here we are today.... progressing along. I feel like I’m starting to get the hang of watering.

Made the decision to go straight into 3 gallon pots with FF Ocean.

Still ironing out the tent and will have a much larger exhaust fan and then possibly scrap the CMH in favor of LED if I still can’t get the heat controlled.

Hey @TorturedSoul , what 2 lights would you recommend if I were going LED? I just can't get the heat under control with this CMH and I'm thinking I'd like to fill the full tent.

Busy weekend in the garden transferred everything to 3 gallon smart pots with FFOF and upgraded to an 8” Hyperfan in hopes of taming the CMH temps.

It’s cooling off here, so temps aren’t as big of a concern, but I still want to be able to maintain a good environment year round that is quiet, efficient, and smell proof. . If I can’t get there with this than it’ll be time to look at Quantum Boards.

Also made the decision to go with 3 gallon pots since I have no idea how many of these could end up male and in the trash.

Still cruising along.... will the topping all plants between the 4th and 6th nodes over the coming days. Still contemplating adding an additional light.

@BudgetLED I'm thinking I may add a small light of yours beside this CMH and they upgrade to 2 of your lights after this grow is done.

Sounds good! We have a new 130w kit coming out later this week! We be a great second light option for your grow space.

We also have a new 65w light we are launching too. Great as a clone board or a supplement full cycle light.
