There is no reason to try and keep the roots separated in the reservoir.
And remember, when you whack the males you will take a good portion of the roots from neighboring plants but they will grow back very strongly in a couple of days. Part of their will to survive and we just take advantage of it.

Interesting indeed. But what about simply cutting the male plant down to the last two nodes and removing any bud sites. Thereby only leaving a few fan leaves to keep the plant (and roots) alive. Just keep pruning any new bud sites that may appear long before they form sacks. This way you dont need to trim any roots or stress the females in anyway whatsoever.
