I vegged a 5 ft by 3 ft area (1.5m x 0.9m) with 216W (4xT5 HO tubes) of CFL for many months
First in regular CFL spectrum
Later in purple spectrum CFL (I moved the light up out of the way for the photo)
Notice how in the first photo one end of the light is hung much higher than the other end to get the light closer to different height plants. I like light 6" (15cm) until the plants get about 8" (20 cm) tall, then I run as close as possible without actually burning the leaves, as close as 1/2" (1 cm.) This is with 54 watt tubes. For a 200 watt light bulb you might double the distance.
The light from a CFL bulb leaves equally from all sides of the tubes. Thus straight tubes and reflectors covers more area and deliver more lumens in a downward direction than hanging light bulbs deliver.
