Establishing a mother

Morning All - I'm new to this so please bear with me. I *think* I know the answer to this but since this is my first grow, I want to confirm

what is the order of events to determine sex and establish a mother?

its my understanding that you should not ideally go from flower back to veg

is there a way to determine sex PRIOR to switching to flower?

or...

1 take cuttings from a plant in the veg side

2 place said cuttings in the flower side and watch for signs maintaining original donor in veg.

3. if they show male, toss the lot

4. if they show female then you can proceed with more clones and press on in confidence

pretty much it?
