Growing in backyard

so im growing in my back yard and watering it myself, im in northern cali.
how often should i water it?
and do i need to do anything else other than watering? its in about a 1 foot diamater pot, two plants, 1 in each pot.

i like to stick my finger in the soil and if theres still moisture, wait to give em water. since they are in pots, pick them up and feel their weight after youve watered when compared to when they are dry.
after they are about a month old you can start feeding them once every 2 weeks.
