You could have bent the stems back and forth and then tie them down with pipe cleaners or garden wires to reduce the height
I do this often to control height

This is a Super Cropped plant that I just harvested. See where I broke / bent branches over to control the height & bush her out ? It also increases yield.
This is the actual plant before harvest.
Cropping is when you simply bend over the stem without snapping it off completely there is no more to it than that pinch and bend.

Not snapping it is the trick and way before flowering starts and until a little after flowering starts. With photoperiods it's a longer veg window so you can get it right easily. Autoflower give you less time but can do amazing things with them as well although there are opinions on how much stress they'll take before it stunts them and yield goes to crap so prepare yourself for success just as much as failure.
