LED Grow Lights?

Lately I've seen led grow lights in blue, red and blue/red mix. They look attractive in the fact they draw way less electric and little to no heat.

Has anyone tried these yet? Some led setup cost almost the same as MH and/or HPS light systems.

Re: LED Grow Lights ????

They are the newest in the grow light industry. They say they are awesome but I have no experience in it.

Re: LED Grow Lights ????

You can get very cheap leds (1000 for $26) on the internet. You need to read up on basic electronics to solder them together in the appropriate series and connected to the right DC power source, but, for under $100 you could make an led grow light bank that is 10 times more powerful than the overpriced stuff for sale on ebay. You can also dangle leds all around your plant because they aren't hot. That way you can increase the light intensity for the bottom of the plants more than even some HID setups. You get less light intensity and penetration in exchange for less money per watt and limitless stealth possibilities.

Hummm,
Wonder is blue led xmas lights would work. Way cheap and already wired. Might help as a suppliment. I'll see what happens and post the results.:allgood:

Re: LED Grow Lights ????

I think they are only cost effective in the long run, I could be wrong, The plants that I have seen grown with them so far have been kinda small in comparison to a 600w hps and they were using fewer plants too.

Re: LED Grow Lights ????

bringing back a dead post here, but...i believe the leds are the high intensity ones, which they make flash lights out of. i have read up on these systems and they are really cool sounding. it seems like you could power a lot of lights and get a lot more produced with less or equal power.

Re: LED Grow Lights ????

if you do a search, you'lll find an even better thread than this on the LED's. It includes a link to a DIY site on how to wire up your own LED grow lights.

Re: LED Grow Lights ????

WOW, thanks Pal! What kind of investment do you think it would take to get the same light intesity as say a 250 watt HPS? and what would be the difference in power consumption? I'm going to have the opportunity to build my grow room from scratch in about a year and a half/ I'm growing/buying things as I go for that furture room, but I haven't gotten the HPS yet, and was wondering if the LED's would be more cost prohibitive. I'm not even sure how they would be incorporated into a grow room.

Re: LED Grow Lights ????

they replace the grow lights...according to the web sites they produce the correct colors that you need for the grow and you use the bulbs...how else do you incorporate lighting systems?

Re: LED Grow Lights ????

Sorry bro. I am not a light specialist but more info comes out all the time. When I find the answer I will let you know but one site said 70 leds but did not say which ones. Not all leds are created equally. Some are super powerful and some are just colored lights.:cheesygrinsmiley:

Re: LED Grow Lights ????

do you see the prices on those? you need the leds to be at 430nM which is a blue/violet led and 660nM which is a red light. you will need numerous of the lights that are for sale on ledgrowlights...i am really curious about these leds and i think i may attempt to make a 3' x 3' board when i get can a few dollars together to build it. i was in electronics engineering for a few years and still have friends who will be willing to help me design a board. i need to do some more research as to how much red vs blue is needed and i want to make my board actually on a dial to change between a few settings in order to design the light to actually go through the veg and flowering stages, because i would only assume that a different light spectrum in the end is needed.

Re: LED Grow Lights ????

ClubsRule: You should start a grow journal when you start this project you mentioned. For me, it will be another year or two before I can revamp my present grow set up, but I'm very interested in how this light set up is put together from scratch, and how effective and costly they are, in relation to an HPS set up for instance. I do all fluoro now, but plan to incorporate better lights (HPS or what ever) into my next grow room.

It is going to be some time till I can get a grow journal of LED's but I hope to get a grow journal on here soon! :cheesygrinsmiley:

How are you using the LED from seed to flower and with any other supplementary light CFL? I'm looking into adding LED to my flowering chamber in conjunction with the current CFL I have.
