And then begin to lightly water around the edges of the pots?

yes, water from the edges... the roots seek that water. It is awesome the amount of control you have. Oldmac taught me this... be smarter than your plants.

Hopefully they still have a chance. Either way my next attempt will be better. Gonna buy proper soil mix and try those material pots that are supposed to be nice and airy. The stuff I am using now clumps and compacts so much it's defo not helping the issue.
