Then it is indeed time to water. Water them slowly as if watering a sponge, trying to see how much water you can get that soil to hold before it runs out of the bottom. After you are done watering, come back again in 20 minutes or so after the soil has swollen with the moisture, and water again, adding even more water before it starts running out of the bottom.

Then, wait until the plant gets almost to this point again before watering again. Instead of letting the droop go all the way up the stalk, now that you know what it looks like, watch the lowest leaves for this droop to happen again. The lift method at that time should inform you that most of the water is again gone. When you see the lowest leaves begin to droop, this is your sign that you have about 12 hours before it gets to this point and it will be perfectly fine to water.
