Would like to hear from old timers like myself - the 70s

Picture Auggie in 1968. He is 16 yrs old. Cruising the main near his home town on the other side of the bay from San Francisco. It is the eve of the 'Summer of Love'. Proud of the souped-up maroon '55 Chevy two door coupe he's driving, looking for a girl to sit next to him on the white glove leather tuck and roll bench seat.
Suddenly the red light flashs behind the car. Well, we getting pulled over. Something about going ten miles over the speed limit ... is that speeding? Yes, I discover .. it is.
Cop looks inside the car with his flashlight and notices a Toker pipe in the ash tray. "Step outta the car son."

Now, ya'll gotta know that in 1968 this is felony. "Paraphernalia" is bad enough, but if it has "residue" in it ... bad.
Cop looks at it carefully, smells it. LoL. I'm looking at him wondering if I'm going to juvie, he's youngish ... He looks at me and motions towards my letter coat and says "You play football". I told him I do and what position etc. We talk high school football for a minute; seems he is a homeboy graduating from a rival school from mine. The radio tells him I have no wants or warrants. He asks, "I know that centers get to handle the ball, but can you throw?" I told him I could throw pretty well. He says, "I'll make you a deal ..." and hands the pipe back to me. "If you can throw this in that field over there," motioning toward and empty and dark plot, "so far that I can't find it - I will let you go. If not, well ..." he shrugged.
Before he could come up with an alternative I chucked the damn thing as far as I could and heard it shatter in the darkness.

He handed me my brand new drivers license and told me to 'slow the hell down, ok?' and got back in his car.

He could never be a cop these days.
Went to the flea market in Berkeley the next Saturday and got a brand new one.

55 Chevy coupe eh? Betcha wish you had it now. 265 V8, 3 on the tree?

yes, exactly. That's the way I got it. The way it ended up ... different. 427 with a four barrel Holley out of a vette. We had to do some modifying as you can imagine. Custom motor mounts, etc. Cut a hole in the hood for the blower. Four speed hurst shifter, racing slicks (legal on the street back then). Raked. Dark red large flake custom paint, yellow and orange flames outta the wheel wells. Mag wheels, ten inch on the back. Re-chromed bumpers. Inside was white glove leather, tuck and roll. Head liner was dark red leather diamond tuck. Dash repainted black hand rubbed lacquer, re-chromed knobs and handels. Oh, and an EIGHT TRACK deck. LoL.

Me and my buddies worked on that car for two years. It was bad ass. Pretty to look at, tough to out run. I think the back seat got more wear than the front. Dangerous to drive, kinda squirrley .. lol, would get sideways in a heart beat. Those were the days, my friend.

Today it would be a $40,000 car - easy.

It sure is nice to be around people my age, yea the good old days $10 ounces, panama red, Columbian Gold, Thai stick, and more. Good memories, Cheech and Chongs Big bamboo album, smoked a joint of Columbian gold then listened to it, we busted a gut as it was hilarious. Sister Mary elephant, Fe Fe , Blind melon Chitlin , what's your name Bob, and so on.

NICE!

My first car was a '55 green 4dr, straight 6 (250ci ?), 3 on the tree. I was 15 and decided I could rebuild an engine (I never had before but what the heck?). Many months later, it ran, but I had to check the gas at every oil fill. It smoked more than I did! I didn't know about honing cylinders or setting rings. It became a donor car to another 55 coupe that I bought for $250. I so wish it was in my driveway now, but I always have a 50s-60s Chevy in the garage.

I love this thread!

Best of Buds

Great story Auggie. :laughtwo:

The 70s, good lord, my college years. I was more than a handful during those years. It was the beginning of my hippie years, only I did them without drugs. Go figure. Repressive, fundamentalist upbringing. Lol! Geez, didn't even start smoking weed until I was 22, but I do remember "lids". Much more user friendly than what gets sold today on the street.

Thank God we don't have to be out there looking anymore.

Boy do I remember those days! My First Street purchase was a four-finger lid of a leaf. My favorite was the Thai and Buddah stick. Of course, the Columbian varieties were the most available at the time, and weren't bad for what they were. You could usually tell a stoner house by the amount of double albums they had to clean the seeds out of the smokable weed...gotta love the Big Bambu album! LOL

Do not mess with a dragon...
for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

I'm completely blind and I WILL bring up some girls, no matter how long it takes!

I no longer run in Christian circles, so to speak. Organized religion and I are better off in separate rooms. :laughtwo: I've grown into more of a cosmic spiritualist, more in tune with the creator of the universe than I was during my fundamental Christian days of youth.

Cannabis is thought of as "the Devil's lettuce" and evil beyond belief in most Christian circles. How sad for them, eh? They've a complete disconnect to an entire body system that benefits from introducing backup soldiers in the form of phytocannabinoids and restrict themselves from the possibility of letting themselves get high so that they can more easily commune with their God. I, on the other hand, take a more enlightened view of cannabis. I'd have a hard time pretending to be someone I wasn't to attend weekly services without reproach. For a religion built on acceptance and unconditional love there sure are a lot of rules to pay attention to.

Yawl Be Good!!

dude, used to go the MSG in NYC to see many good shows in the 70 s! led zep, queen, elp, who , zappa..etc. always had the trusted bong in tow! smoking half oz of dirt weed with lots of seeds...lol

man those were the days... long before scumbag scaplers cornered the market on good seats..

Went to MSG in the 70's, too. All the great bands you mentioned and also Pink Floyd, Yes, Tull.

Great times...I remember when the lights went up there after the concerts, you could barely see the other side, the smoke was so thick. You used to be able to hand your joint to a security guard standing by you and he'd take a toke and hand it back. Ah, the good 'ole days.

But not out at the Colosseum on Long Island...anyone lighting up was grabbed and escorted out by the cops. Only pills or snorting out there...fucking crazy times! :thumb:

I don't remember ever sharing: first time I got high was my 22nd birthday. Raised a sweet, repressed fundamental Christian girl, the Devil's lettuce was from another world. Friends of mine who weren't so repressed discovered my oversight and made it their job to get me completely wasted. I seem to recall something with an apple and a straw????? It was 40 years ago. :laughtwo:

They were good friends and didn't take advantage of the situation, although one was so charming I moved him into my apartment for six months. I wasn't completely repressed. :laughtwo:

Led Zepplin 1977 Kingdome, Seattle. First time I ever smoked Columbian.
Also the first time I sprayed everyone in the front seat with Coca Cola. :cough:
Moral to the story..
give it a minute before drinking something. AND don't hit it like it's homegrown leaf. heh.

Used to go to the Oakland Collesium for "Day on the Green". A LOT of good shows. Led Zep, Beach Boys, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Lover Boy, Blue Oyster Cult (back when they were called Soft White Underbelly), and a few i can't even remember.

Used to show up at the break of dawn for the 'before show party' in the parking lot. Kind of remember hooking up with a blond hippy girl in the back of a 65 Chevy Chevelle station wagon. By the time the show started at noon, I (and everyone else) would be HAMMERED. I remember getting to the front of the line once and there was four Oakland cops searching people. He asked me if I had any alcohol or weapons, I don't think I understood the question so he patted me down. Found a baggie with about fifty pre-rolled in it. He just shook his head and stuffed the package back in my pocket and pushed me through.

Those were the days when the air was dirty - and sex was clean.
