First Time Grower, 20 Plants!

yeah, i think butch may be right. if that middle pic is what you're seeing, that's new growth. real healthy looking too. all your plants look really good man. :)

Yes, the room is getting full already, I can only imagine when they really start growing, like people say they will when flowering! I'm trying to keep the plants spread out a bit from each other so more leaves get more light.

Next sunday will be the completion of 7 weeks of vegging, and monday will be Day 50. The current plan is to have the changeover on monday to flowering.

We bought a couple Magniwing reflectors yesterday, $24 each, from a new hydroponics store we haven't been to before. They aren't fancy or sealed for air cooling but they should do the job. The socket is already installed in them. We have to get our electrician friend to wire up the ballasts and then we are ready to go. We will at least get the 1000 watt HPS in the room, even if it takes a few extra days to get the 400 watt HPS ready.

Day 51. No new pictures this week, sorry. They look about the same as last week, except slightly taller. I measured the height, and the shortest plants are about 17-18 inches, the tallest is 28-29 inches.

But all is not well and good in the grow room, unfortunately. My assistant, K, is really becoming a severe pain in my ass. He gets to be very demanding, everything HAS to be his way, when I tell him why one of his ideas isn't the best, I get a screaming lecture, so instead of arguing back, I just let him have his way.

Example. We have 2 eye hooks in the ceiling to support the lights. We made plans for how the new HPS lights would hang up there. The solution is a 2X3 piece of wood 7-1/2 feet long. 2 pieces of rope will go from the ceiling hooks to this piece of 2 by 3, hanging about a foot and a half lower to clear the ceiling fan. Then, from this 2 by 3, 2 ropes will hang down to support each light. Simple, right? NO! K INSISTED that he drill holes in the 2 by 3 and install smaller eye hooks for each individual rope. Wrapping the rope around the 2 by 3 isn't good enough, they HAVE to have eye hooks! After a while I just let him have his way. Not because I think he's right, but because it's just not worth the hassle.

He was supposed to have our neighbor wire up the industrial ballasts 2 weeks ago for the HPS lights, but that still isn't done, and we are supposed to be flowering NOW, and he's screwing this up, etc.

And since we got the CO2 tank last week, he's become a real pain in the ass about the plastic sheet door to the room being totally shut ALL the time. Even when the fans are on and the vacuum sucks the sheet in and rips it off the velcro tabs on the wall because he's too cheap to buy another fan to complete the room air circulation system and equalize the pressure. He'd rather save $4 and wait 2 weeks for the fan to be shipped rather than buy it at the store directly.

So if you're going to partner up with someone to get your first grow financed and under way, my advice is... DON'T.

/RANT

Other than that, things in the room look good. Flowering soon!

In other news, we cut some clones yesterday. I'll keep a few from the best plants for myself, and the rest can be sold to a local dispensary for some cash.

hey man. sorry to hear about the issues with your partner. you're right about doing it on your own. no hassels that way. keep on the good work and stay up.

sh*t happens when you get to many chiefs in the room. The best thing to do to save not only the grow but your friendship is to finish and do seperate grows.. Sometimes is just best that way. Not cause you hate eachother but cause you respect eachother. Just speaking out of experience..Great job either way!!

Day 57 (56 days veg + 1 day flower) update:

Things are doing better. K turned down his bitchiness factor some, and I didn't push him as much as I normally do, so things are ok for now.

We finally got the HPS ballasts wired and all set to go, so 2 days ago we took down the 400 watt MH lights and put up the new lighting system. Since it was our second time doing it, this installation is MUCH cleaner and neater than the first one, each light is independently adjustable for height now.

Upon starting the lights for the first time in the room, I quickly found out why sealed, ventilated light reflectors cost $80 or more. That 1000 watt HPS puts out some HEAT !!! It was hitting me in the chest with a heat wave from 5 feet away! DAMN!!! The 400 watt HPS was nowhere near as bad. We are using a pair of $24 Magniwing reflectors that came with the light bulb socket already built in.

Since the power usage has nearly doubled, from 800 watts to 1400 + the ballast inefficiency amount, however much that may be, I have only the 1000 watt light running on the original light timer / circuit breaker. The 400 is running off a seperate timer on ANOTHER circuit breaker, to spread out the power load somewhat.

We decided to put the taller plants (Bubba Kushes) under the 400, and the shorter plants (Granddaddy Purples) under the 1000. The Purple Kushes are scattered around in there somewhere, I'm not exactly sure where they are without looking at the name tags on the buckets. The 400 is 2 feet above its plants, and the 1000 is 3-1/2 feet above its plants. The 400 is also adjusted to be about a foot lower than the 1000. K added the second upper layer of Mylar to the walls, and we rearranged the room so we could spread the plants out even more. 1400 watts lights up this room pretty well now!

Our CO2 tank ran empty last night, so we need to refill it tomorrow, I'll handle that. Carrying 5 gallon water jugs to and from the car isn't THAT unusual, but a CO2 tank will get attention! Subtlety is the word here!

Both K and Y say the plants are already looking better and growing, but I think they are just a bit excited. I'm sure things are doing well, but I'll wait and see.

I also switched to the bloom nutes yesterday, since the plants were due for their next water / fertilizer application. Veg was all Fox Farms Grow Big / Big Bloom, the flowering is Tiger Bloom and Big Bloom, with a couple weeks of Grow Big added in for weeks 3 and 4, according to the Fox Farms published list. I also reduced the nute strength to about 75% for their first time in flowering.

Here's the new photos, they are also in my Gallery in case these links quit working.

These kinks in your venting is KILLING the hell out of your fans. Keep in mind a 90 degree angle turn will slaughter your ventilation let alone wrap arounds. My suggestion is to try to figure a venting system with as little turns in it as possible. Then mount them up. I draw mini blueprints first before posting up lines to vent through. Trust me it will help you more then you think. I do at least 10 different blueprints before I even put a screw into the wall. THis is just a thought. It will help your heat issues, so You can lower the lights a bit.:ganjamon:

Other then that bor nice ladiws. And that GDP is just lookin good as hell!!!:ganjamon:

Yes, I could straighten out the venting tubes some. That's the trouble with that dryer duct. Once you stretch it out longer it does not want to go back to being shorter and stay there.

Looking way better than my first grow. Ladies looking good, your room has turned out great from when you first started. First time for me I didn't really realize the cost to setup. Boy dose it hurt the pockets the first time. Well i be watching to see the outcome.:bongrip:

i would use your two 400 with the 1000 when you bud 20 plants need alot of light plus i hear its good to mix hps and MH if you can

i would use your two 400 with the 1000 when you bud 20 plants need alot of light plus i hear its good to mix hps and MH if you can

Who told you that?

MH lamps give you 20% less light overall than HPS. Also, HPS emits more light in the orange and red range, which seems to promote flowering. While MH emits a bit more UVB, it doesn't seem to really make much of a difference in the quality of the finished product.

Flowers grown under MH will be similar in quality to HPS, but will be noticeably smaller. Using HPS along with MH in the flower stage will theoretically keep growth compact and bushy but you could be getting more lumens and less heat in your grow room with with 2 HPS.

Don't make a grow more complicated than it needs to be. I see way too many people knocking themselves out and doing ridiculous things in their grows because they "heard" something, usually from someone who has never grown crabgrass, let alone Marijuana.

ya i no that im just saying if you only have one 1000 watt hps for 20 plants thats not much light unless your doing a sea of green the mh would just be more light on them and its better then some plants not getting hit at all eather way you decide to do it i hope you crop out fat

I am currently using a 1000 watt hps AND a 400 watt hps.

1400 watts of HPS total right now.

And as halfbaked said, the first time cost is indeed a killer. You think you are all set, then you realize that you need an extra fan or light, plus a timer to control it, then you have to buy the HPS lights for flowering, nutes, fans, PH meter, soil, perlite, a CO2 tank/relay/regulator/flowmeter setup plus its own timer, bigger fans, carbon filters, duct tape, mylar, etc. It feels like the spending will never end. I think we are close to the end of the spending, but it's been a lot. I'd guess we've got about $1,600 to $1,800 in this grow so far, maybe even a little more.

Mr. K here. Randys partner. before i rant, i want to say things are better, and i love him, but Randy saying i was bitching really sets me off. If you guys only had an idea of how i have tried to get him to make the best possible choices, and he didnt. time and time again. I know i started getting pissed, but jesus, this is a lot of me and my friends money on the line, and im not getting pinched because of ignorance.

First off, you should know that the functioning of our grow room is because of my engineering and found funding. i know tht sounds cocky, but if you only had an idea of how Randy was planning on doing this, he would have gotten pinched by week two. Granted, ive never done this before, but have family that grew my whole life, and ive been around the grow process for years. and i smoke! He never even saw a marijuana plant before i brought the clones over. Randy is in it to make a buck, not for the love of the plants or the culture, and im sorry, that makes a big difference.

He approached ME for this project, not the other way around. I assume its because he knows i know what im doing.

Theres a right way, and a half assed way, and well, Randy never wanted to do more than a C+. i needed someone who was going to be a real 'care giver', and all i kept seeing were things that would get us busted, or destroy our crop.

(like i said, things are better now, but since he wants to get all Dr. Phil on a forum, i'm game to play ball)

Randy wanted to use cardboard leaned up along the wall as a 4th wall instead of a light proof tarp. He wanted to hang our lights on an A-frame 2x4 fused together with only duct tape. he wanted 20 5 gallon buckets, and no money to fill them. he wanted no pulleys for the lights. he refused to remove his ceiling fan that was in the way, he didnt want any holes in the walls, or paint scuffs. he had NO CLUE as to how much work and sacrifice this is

(he is doing great though....let me finish)

The #1 reason people get busted is smell. I fixed this by building a carbon filter that works, as well as an automatic air sanitizer installed by the front door. Time and time again, Randy would turn off the freshener because he 'wanted citrus smell instead'. Id walk in the hall, and his place would smell like Amsterdam.

a few times, the carbon filter needed to be tended to, and randy would just wait hours for me to come over to fix it, instead of just taking care of it himself.

We have co2 in the room (which randy didnt buy) leaking because randy decided not to fix the tarp when the suction of our exhaust fan was pulling our air/light seal. he rather show me my design was flawed rather than correcting it, and hours of co2 was wasted

He mentioned i was supposed to get the lights wired 2 weeks earlier? between me and my friend, we have $1500 invested in this room. Randy has $500. We are out of money, and Randy never offered any money to get the lights wired quicker. If we had cash, it would have gotten done. I'm pretty sure he can cough up a few bucks.

He mentions how i wanted to hang the lights with hooks? He wanted to wrap rope around a 2x3 in earthquake country. connected to 1000w and 400w lights. one good shake and the lights would slip right down the sides of the 2x3. (not to mention breaking a window in the process)

He was a tight ass about giving his partner a key to make sure the place doesn't set on fire while hes gone every night from 8pm-5am... he was too worried id look at his porn on the computer. all i wanted was to be able to tend to our babies...thank god he did finally give me a key because.....

He leaves for the night to go to work, and id go check on the room 20 mins later and he left the room at 90 degrees! all he had to do was hook up the duct to the air conditioner to bring down the temp, but he was lazy.

There have been times the plants were dryer than a corpses vagina and he didnt water them because it 'wasn't scheduled to'...instead of just using a green thumb and seeing your big plants need more water than your little ones.

I never wanted to hang the lights with rope.

the ducts leading to the exhaust of the lights was faulty. it would fall off essentially making our fan useless. this was ignored a couple times

I told him a day before I left for the east to fix that kink in the ducting. that it was killing our ventilation. still not done, and yet you fine people remind him of something he already knows. In fact, hes the one who told me about airflow when i installed the original ducts. = lazy.

i didnt buy the fan online to save $4. no store had it in stock. including Lowes, which was the cheapest. home depot was an online ripoff tho.

he has put his webcam in his window with a big red light on it. drawing attention to the room (which is right over the managers car)

he left his blinds open all the time in the beginning

these were just a few things i remember off the top of my head. i'm not an asshole, i just expect a certain level intelligence. well, i can be an asshole.

with all that said. Randy, you are doing 100% better. and me too. sorry i yelled and was an asshole, but well, you were the schmuck firrst. hahaha

peace and love,
mr. k
