So I've tapped out the alpha-pinene reduction now. Next I'll run it at alpha-pinene >= 0.20%, and turn down the myrcene.

I think I also read that tetpinolene doesn’t seem to be naturally occurring in CBD strains?
One note on Durban Poison though, as an African landrace it can have higher than average levels of THCV, which is absolutely a stimulant.
Yeah I was wondering Dutch Passion sells that THC victory and at the moment it's half price..as it's expensive stuff but touts almost equal amounts of thc & thcv around 6-8% for both... I was curious what that was about.
 
Working the Kannapedia database some more...

OK, so I dropped the myrcene down quite a bit... got nothing of interest.

Tried bumping myrcene back up, and dropping terpinolene a bit more. That also produced nothing. Bumped terpinolene back up.

Tried reducing limonene and caryophyllene to >= zero. Also nothing.

Now I have only two criteria, high myrcene and high terpinolene, and I'm not seeing anything new.

I've kept terpinolene pumped up, and now dropped myrcene a bit, with no filtering of pinene or any of the others.

Got one! ... however, I think I'm definitely out of the Holy Grail realm... just terpinolene dominant + high gamma-terpinene, and non-stratospheric total terpenes

Here's a new chart showing total terps, pine terps, and non-pine terps for the Kannapedia profiles above. For pine terps, I am including the total of terpinolene, terpinene, pinene, and ocimene. (Ocimene is also known as stimulating, and is found in a least some pine trees.) For non-pine terps, I am including myrcene, limonene, beta-caryophyllene, and humulene. Also shown is the ratio of pine terps to non-pine terps (H). Theoretically, the higher H is, the more sativa dominant the pheno; the closer to 1.0 it is, the more the pheno is 50/50; and under 1.0 is indica leaning. The far right column is the commercial classification given to the strain.

My definition or interpretation of "class deviation" is that the terp profile for the given strain represents a pheno that is different than the stated commercial classification for the strain. For example, the above terp profile for Sugar Black Rose is for a sativa pheno of that strain. Likewise for Sin City Kush. Cherry Diesel is known as a 50/50 hybrid; however, the terp profile above is for a sativa pheno. Dark Knight is known as indica-dominant; however, the terp profile above is for a sativa-leaning pheno. Likewise for Purple Cactus (slightly sativa leaning). Phenos above that are slightly sativa leaning, or slightly indica leaning, can be regarded as 50/50 hybrids.

If my theory about "class deviation" being attributed to phenotypes is true, then my color-coded classification above based on the ratio of pine to non-pine terpenes seems to be true. Keep in mind that – with the possible exception of some Durban Poison genetics (landrace) – all of the above are sativa/indica hybrids, and they will usually throw at least 2 phenos.

I'll analyze the above color-coded table some more in my next post.

The first thing I'd like to do is eliminate the ones with seemingly impossible values for total terpenes. I don't know if they are real or not. Those are: Durban Poison 22.28, Dark Night #3 20.00, C4 13.29, Plushypinez 11.82. From what I've seen, total terpenes should be in the range of 1-5%. I've seen some over 6% online. Anything above that I'd say is very unusual. I'll just set an arbitrary cutoff point of 10%.

For Durban Poison I'll use this terp profile:

Recap... The chart represents phenos of specific strains that have terpinolene dominant, and also have high levels of pinene, as well as fairly high levels of myrcene, limonene, and caryophyllene. I used these search criteria in order to find "Holy Grail" strains that exhibit both high bud rot resistance and high leaf mold resistance. I arrived at this hypthetical combination terp profile by combining the terpenes in Humboldt Dream (high leaf mold resistance and moderate bud rot resistance) with those in HI-BISCUS (high bud rot resistance and poor leaf mold resistance).

These terpinolene dominant strains are mostly sativa dominant. Only 2 are indica dominant, and 2 can be viewed as 50/50 hybrids. The sativa leaning ones can be viewed as also having indica effects.

OK, now for a bit of witchcraft. Let's say HI-BISCUS has amazing bud rot resistance (BR) because of total pine terpenes PT, and show it as BR 1.0. Then we can show the BR for the other strains/phenos in relation to BR 1.0. (BR = botrytis resistance). Now, let's say Humboldt Dream's amazing leaf mold resistance (MR) is due to the combination of high myrcene and high pinene – the 2 dominant terpenes, myrcene .91% and pinene .52%. Let's assume that if pinene is having a beneficial effect here, then all the pine terpenes also would. So the baseline becomes myrcene .91% and PT 0.52%. Since Humbold Dream has the lowest PT on the chart, we can ignore it in our baseline, and focus just on myrcene at .91%. I'll make myrcene .91% be the baseline for MR and show it as 1.0. (I'm guessing here that just as terpinolene is probably the key to bud rot resistance, so myrcene is the key for leaf mold resistance. BIG GUESS!)

Conclusions

There's 6 potential Holy Grail phenos here: Sin City Kush, Casey Jones, Purple Cactus #4, Agent Orange, Chemodo Dragon, and Vanilla Kush.

3 of those have extremely high total terpenes, Casey Jones 8.31%, Sin City 9.51%, and Purple Cactus 9.82%. Has anyone ever seen terps this high? The highest from my other analysis was Dutch Treat at 3.29%.

I'll keep those in mind, but for now I am removing Casey Jones, Sin City, and Purple Cactus...

All have very high total terps, meaning high resin production. All have terpinolene dominant, with lots of pine terps and non-pine terps. In theory, they would be super fungus resistant.

Below are the high terpinolene strains from my other analysis. None of them has myrcene close to 1.0% like Humboldt Dream – my baseline for leaf mold resistance. I converted to the above pine terpene (PT)/non-pine terpene (NPT) format. I also added in terpinolene percent (TP).

I also added in the Holy Grail losers from above (the high BR index ones).

They are sorted by hypothetical botrytis resistance (BR), with 1.0 being the baseline of HI-BISCUS.

HI-BISCUS clone in 15 gal, hammered by septoria and downy mildew. This is my best bud rot resistant plant, but sadly not doing well in this pot. Looks like a drainage problem... pot's been used multiple times... must have gotten clogged. I just bought two 10 gal black plastic pots today... looking forward to trying them out.

My picks for bud rot resistant strains

(I have decided to remove Vanilla Kush, since the total terps seem way too high @ 6.5%, and other terp profiles I've found for the strain don't match up.)

I selected 13 out of 19 terp profiles that I analyzed (in bold in the chart). Out of these 13, I'll try to get seed for some, and then hunt for the right phenos. The 13 are all well-known strains. 3 of them I'm calling "Holy Grail" strains/phenos that have potentially very high bud rot (botrytis) and leaf mold resistant, marked with ***.

The chart is sorted by hypothetical botrytis resistance (BR) in the far right column, with the baseline being HI-BISCUS, BR=1.0. The funny thing is, I did all these calculations based off of ONE terpene profile for HI-BISCUS, and it's not even the official one from Humboldt Seed Co. (they don't have one available), and the profile I had was missing the total terps, so I just made a big fat guess of 2.34%. Soooo... It will take me a while to produce some more HI-BISCUS buds and have them tested. Whatever the case, the fact remains that the one harvest I did of HI-BISCUS showed spectacular bud rot resistance.

Although Blueberry has some Thai genetics, its phenotype is mostly from its Afghani heritage.

I think BB is (Purple Thai x Afghani) x another Thai. So, some genetics from sativas, but also indica.

There are of course different descendants of BB, and there will be different phenos, so it's hard to say anything definitive about terpene profile without actually having a terpene profile for the flower in question.

My guess is that my pheno of BB is high in myrcene and other non-pine terpenes, probably has very little terpinolene, and not a lot of the other pine terpenes. According to my recent investigations, it would be considered an indica leaning pheno. That also matches the effects I get from it. I would say it's actually indica dominant.

I've heard others make the general statement that Blueberry is mold resistant, and you can also find that out online; however, now I'm fully of the mind that most hybrid strains (i.e. not landrace), when grown from seed, result in at least 2 phenos. I'm talking about stable seed lines. For example, Chemdawg is mostly known as a 50/50 hybrid, and perhaps mostly indica leaning, and has (at least) 5 known phenos. These all look indica leaning to me, and pheno D may be the least indica leaning of the bunch.

I'm guessing that Chemdawg D could be quite bud rot resistant.

My theory now is that "mold resistance" is actually broken down into two categories, which are bud rot resistance (botrytis) and leaf mold resistance. I think that different terpene profiles define these two categories, with high amounts of terpinolene and other "pine terpenes" associated with bud rot resistance, and high amounts of myrcene and pinene associated with leaf mold resistance.

I'm thinking these will be the next seeds I look for, one of these days. Maybe I'll go for Agent Orange and Chemodo Dragon first, since pheno hunting will probably be easier. I'm super interested in all of them, though. When they're in veg, I'll generally look for sativa growth traits, and then flower as many as I can of the strain – the winners will be the ones that are the most bud rot and leaf mold resistant. Most are sativas as would be expected, but a couple "Chem" strains are indica-leaning, which is exciting.

My grow is undergoing a transition phase as we head toward the first day of winter, with the weather becoming cooler and wetter with each passing week, and solar exposure reaching its annual low point in a mere 16 days. In other words, it's a bad time to grow cannabis here in the land of mold. But all is not lost!

I recently posted about all the leaf mold trouble in my flower house. Two of the plants were too far gone, so I went ahead and chopped them... the Blueberry and the HI-BISCUS... both suffering from lots of septoria leaf spot mold and/or downy mildew. Is there a saying for this in the grower community? How about, "Dying in the Home Stretch"... DHS? The HI-BISCUS was also suffering from a pot drainage problem... it was a fabric pot that had been reused several times... must have been clogged.

Here's some pics from today...

HI-BISCUS clone in a new 10 gal pot – first time I've tried this pot size. I drilled a center hole in the bottom of the pot, and a ring of smaller holes, to supplement the side-holes. I added a layer of small cinder rocks and gravel at the bottom, and then a thin layer of coco coir on top of that (I'm out of perlite at the moment). I also use coir as a 1" mulch layer on the surface. The grow mix is a primo batch of my usual custom living super soil, this time with a good amount of sifted compost soil added. This also represents an early transfer from 1 gal to final pot size – something I usually lag on considerably. This plant should do very well, and I will also transfer her to flower a bit earlier than has been my usual practice.

This Double Black Label CBG plant has been in the veg house for months, and is stuck in an extended pre-flowering state even under the night interruption lights. She's at the end of her life cycle. How possible? Because this pheno has recessive auto-flower genes. This is my only mother, so I'm giving up on DBL CBG.

In the flower house, Humboldt Dream in a 7 gal. pot, doing very well. She's showing strong leaf mold resistance, although not 100%. She's got a ways to go, and is still drinking well. Nice fragrance! This is my best indica dominant plant.

I did a little research to see which strains are high in THCV. @Melville Hobbes @Fenderbender

The lab test results I looked at for Durban Poison didn't show any significant THCV, but maybe there's some phenos that do have it. Or maybe there's a lot of hybrid Durban Poison floating around that has deviated a bunch from the landrace.

I did find a test result for Black Beauty showing 7% THCV, but I don't see any seeds for sale for that strain. Humboldt Seed Company might be working on a hybrid. Ben Lind of HSC said in an interview last year,

Our South Africa R&D project focuses on crossing the high-THCv (Tetrahydrocannabivarin) Transkei landrace strain that grows well in the highlands of South Africa with our signature strain, Blueberry Muffin. We are just now starting to gain a better understanding of these less well-known cannabinoids. High THCV strains may provide a viable alternative to a variety of pharmaceuticals in the future. Multiple studies have shown possible potential for THCv in diabetes, Parkinson’s, and seizure disorder treatment.We will be releasing what I like to call our newest unicorn in the barn this fall. Black Beauty is a high THCv strain with appetite suppressing qualities that could potentially be a viable alternative to caffeine and Adderall.

Seeds may be available for the African Transkei landrace that Ben Lind is talking about, but the seller, Seeds of Africa, seems to be sold out everywhere. The strain has a new name which is Misty Kei.

If you google, african "THCV" seeds, you'll see some other possibles: Royal THCV, Free the V, Palmera THCV, Ethiopian Standard (Ace Seeds), ... and a bunch more.

I read a few threads about THCV when I joined the site a couple of years ago.
I was interested in it due to the research indicating it was helpful for people who have anxiety attacks, and because I was growing some seeds that were supposedly Doug's Varin, sold by a former sponsor.
Long story short, it's apparently almost impossible to reliably breed a high THCV strain, with the exception of true Doug's Varin which was sold to GW pharmaceutical, and possibly a strain called Pink Boost Goddess (I'm not joking, they actually named it that).
PBG is impossible to get in seed form as the people growing it exclusively sell bud to dispensaries in California.
All the other strains that are supposed to be high in it are either impossible to obtain, or don't always produce it.
Dutch Passion had a ridiculously high priced strain they called THCVictory for a while, but at 500 Euro for a 5 pack I don't know if anyone ever bought any, or if it reliably produced it.

Edit: @SeedsMan had an auto that was supposed to be 1:1 THCV:CBD at one point, I think.
