Bud Washing

Hello all! I wash with or without additives to my well water. I never use anything anymore except maybe a little lemon juice. No problems! The buds are fresh ,dust and debris free, as well as my taste can detect, without extra stuff. My 5.8 ph water does the job just fine. I use three rinses/buckets. I should mention; change the water frequently when washing buds, especially the first bucket. You wouldn't want to bathe in dirty water would you?

Are you implying to change out bucket one half way through the wash?
Do you empty a bath tub half way through your bath?

Warning: Do NOT use an "organic produce wash" that is based on oils! They sell these in grocery stores and health food stores, and while they might be good for lettuce and cukes....the oil removes resin from the plants.....don't use it!

Water will not harm resin....oil can and does.

I want to try a pump (still haven't tested) but build a manifold so to split the flow of the pump evenly to lessen the force and not be too turbulent. I think an airstone would work if you were willing to invest the time to really work the bubbles into the nooks and crannies of the buds, but I believe it would take too long, especially if washing a large chop.

Not sure it it would be the same dilution as these instructions are adding to a nute tank

You’re after a 3% dilution, so rough numbers divide by 10. It’s one part 3% H2O2 for 3 parts water, so instead of 25% it’s 2.5%.

Instead of 750 ml water and 250 ml 3% H2O2 = 1 liter

975 ml water and 25 ml 34% H2O2 = 1 liter.

Only use peroxide if you have a bit of PM.....there is no benefit otherwise.

My specific concern was uncertainty. You can see She bonsai’d and I had a ton of buds that were tight together. I did my best to keep ‘em separated but she ended up thick so I wanted to do a full bud wash as a cya...I greatly appreciate insight. This forum is FANTASTIC !

If you use a store-bought lemon juice like Real Lemon (not an endorsement, just an example) you'll find that sulfites are in the ingredients.

These sulfites are enough to keep nasty things from growing as they dry, but are not strong enough to kill a mold infestation. That's where the peroxide comes in, and then only if you simply cannot toss the moldy stuff in a bin, where it belongs.

If you don't have any signs of PM but are just wanting to be careful, a normal Baking Soda/Lemon Juice wash is more than adequate.

i gave her the full Monty I already had it mixed up and was feeling sh!tty for taking her cause she was so awesome! I know that’s a bit much but this winter sucked BALLS and she was something I had grown to look forward to seeing. Something alive in such never ending ( it seemed to me) sh!tty weather. One of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had. Very cathartic when I was forced into solace.

I think Hindu Kush was the right choice today lots of introspection.....

Bucket 1: 3 parts RO water to 1 part 3% H202.
Bucket 2: 5 gallons of RO with 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup Lemon Juice
Buckets 3 and 4: RO only.

When reading through the High Brix website, I noticed your wash recipe was only a 1/4 strength from what we've been using for years. Is there a rhyme or reason?

Yep. 1/4 strength will still work and no one will screw up by doubling the recipe.

Things get refined and changed over time....that's the rhyme

Using less reagents and avoiding a few mishaps...that's the reason.

Nature used to do this for us before pollution came to town. Rain, wind and then harvest after a nice sunny day hence why autumn so cleverly has 4 seasons in one day but alas those times are gone for many of us.
The wash method is great for purso i reckon aye, bit of work for semi to commercial grows without room for vats. I wonder if any of the larger legal growers in the states have found a way to replicate this in large amounts using machinery of some sort?

BrixBrothers Ranch.....a high brix, large scale farm, washes their harvests!

My thought is that many are making a simple rinse and dry a big deal that it does not have to be! RINSE IN CLEAN POTABLE WATER AND DRY! A dehumidifier is nice insurance along with good air flow to help prevent mold. Just check the dryingrooms humidity and keep an eye on things. When the washed buds are dry to the touch and the room humidity is reasonable continue as usual with cure process! if you have moldy buds best to cull them! I have been washing buds like this for decades with NO problems!

Coming up on my very first harvest ever. Is this something recommended to do? Or should i wait to get a grow or 2 under my belt before i come down this path? Please note id cry and probably suffer life long depression if i did anything to hurt my first harvest lol.

I washed my first harvest (about page 5-10) and have washed every single harvest since. In fact, I've never NOT washed a chop. I've smoked plenty of street bud to know what unwashed can taste like, but washed buds do taste a lot cleaner and the minor notes in the flavor are greatly accentuated.
