Fire Safety: How do you prevent a disaster?

You’re the reason I have a fire extinguisher 🧯 in my room and I also have one in the basement by the furnace and Breaker box 📦. CL🍀
I hope there’s a smoke detector as well.
Glad you have the fire extinguishers though.
Be safe :thumb:

Good morning @Regrowth hope everything is good with you.
My apologies for not answering sooner.
Can’t keep track of my own threads.
If I say the name it triggers a note because they don’t want to advertise their name.
So I put numbers in the middle.
It’s unsearchable that way.but I thought I had the name in the beginning.
It’s entirely my fault though.
Except the light exploding.
I had a wood ceiling and white plastic on the walls.
All flammable materials.
Anything flammable in the room is a danger.
Although it could happen to anyone being setup safely and having smoke detectors and fire extinguishers is paramount.
Be prepared and rig your setup with non flammable materials where possible is going save lives for sure.
I know @NickHardy changed his setup because of this thread, probably saved his family.
So I know it’s helping others.
We all survived thankfully and now I’m just trying to help others avoid the same fate.
Been a long road back to growing but we made it.
Thanks for dropping in my friend.
Take care.

Someone needs to make fire resistant grow tents .
They would sell well
:passitleft:

The thing is I have no water near my outlets so getting electrocuted isn’t something I worry about, now an electrical fire is something I sweat more.

I have smoke detectors. I’d rather prevent a fire than have one and just be alerted.
Absolutely prevent the fire.
But if something unforeseen happens a big fire extinguisher will save lives.
Well worth the investment.
Hope your doing well my friend.
Take care.

Water is helpful in getting electrocuted in some instances but by no means essential.

That was 220v in my hand last week and could have been much worse.

We have all our wall sockets fitted above the height of the lights, separated circuits and control boxes for lights and pumps. I got electrocuted by a $5 grow light bought from a big box store.

I don’t recommend it.

That was last week - the reason we had the safety breakers that were playing up installed! I didn’t want it happening again . Think maybe you weren’t around those couple of days. Absorber and my Sparky both recommended them.

Also - I hate growing in the tents. The 4x8 veg I’m ok I guess. Two 480w LEDs at 75% is ok. But the 1000w HPS in there with the heat really its a constant nagging worry.

Sorry I missed that.
Ok I get it now.
All the upgrades and neutral issue. :thumb:
Don’t mind me I’m just going to sit quietly in the corner.

Steel office cabinets - the way to go for safety, they last forever, and if you stop you can use them for storage.
Steel won't burn - at least not without thermite.

I have been growing in steel office cabinets for 16 years. Mine are 6' X 3' X 18". The light (HPS) is mounted on top and shines thru a hole. It all is under a concrete garage pad, so it is all good. I do have ventilation inside-to-outside and those have a screen coverings. You could mount the light inside the cabinet but you will need extra ventilation. I think this is the way to go when you have a small grow op. I average about 4z's per cabinet 4 times a year. Pretty good.
Here they are...Currently, my crop is legal and outside!

@VIVOSUN need to line the tents with a product like this , it blocks FLIR (for stealth)and is fire resistant to 650°c.
Hey buddy thanks for the new tech.
But I'm not convinced it's perfect for our needs.
If I close my eyes I can still see the panda film melting and dripping flames on everything.
Nothing you ever want to deal with.
You said 650c melting temp.
Bick lighters 900c , a grow room fire is well over a 1000.
The bran new light blew up.
Temp had to be well over 650.
I'm not saying it isn't a far superior product.
Looks good, has a lot of great uses. :thumb:
Just not fire proof. :Namaste: :Namaste::Namaste:

Can you ping me the address and local number the UK people please?

Got some UK visitors next month and wouldn’t mind swapping the flower room walls for that.
Did you see this?

Hello everyone.
Here is my question.

How do you prevent a grow room fire?

Do not let this happen to you.

For those of you who don't know I had a horrendous fire in my grow room.
For those that do know, Thank you for all your love and support.
Everyone here has been a godsend of love and positivity.

My recommendation for everyone is as follows.

1- put drywall on the ceiling and walls of your grow room.
Any fire retarded material is recommended.

2- install atleast 2 smoke detectors in your grow room.
Install one directly above your light.
And one at the opening that can easily hear.
And a CO,2 Detector at the opening.

3- do not put panda film near any heat source or possible source of ignition
panda film is flammable and produces toxic smoke it will spread the fire everywhere.

4- do not use wood or any other flammable material to hang or brace anything in your room.

5- install a full size fire extinguisher at the entrance to your room.
Make sure its easily accessible.
Small fire extinguishers are not sufficient.
They discharge in seconds and do not do the job you are expecting.

I CAN NOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH. GET A FULL SIZE EXTINGUISHER!!!!!

6- do not use thin or cheep extention cords.
Get minimum #14 guage extension cords #12 would be better.
Don't cheep out here.

7- if you use a power bar make sure it has a GFI breaker on it.
Don't use cheep or dollar store power bars.
Spend the extra 20 bucks and get a good one.

8- keep your room tidy.
Do not store anything in your that is not needed.
Especially if it is flammable

9- do not overload any circuits.
Make sure you are plugged into a 15 amp breaker.
Do not change breakers to 20 amp.
If you need more power run another dedicated circuit to your room.

Please do not let this happen to you.

Also everyone in Canada.

Since growing is legal here you Must inform your insurance company that you have a grow.
Just because its legal doesn't mean your covered.
You must inform them and fill out a small questionnaire.
There won't be a problem you just have to let them know ahead of time.

Please everyone head my warnings.
Don't let something like this happen to you and destroy your life.
These small measures can mean the difference between cleaning up a mess and loosing your home or worse.

Please be careful and weary of possible problems.
Thank you for reading this and doing what I recommend.
Small measures can mean the difference between life and death.

If anyone has any other recommendations as I am not an expert please share them with us.

Bill
