Fire Safety: How do you prevent a disaster?

Sorry to see this happened to you ,thankfully you are still here ,did you ever work out what started the fire?
:passitleft:
Hello everyone.
Here is my question.

How do you prevent a grow room fire?

Do not let this happen to you.

For those of you who don't know I had a horrendous fire in my grow room.
For those that do know, Thank you for all your love and support.
Everyone here has been a godsend of love and positivity.

My recommendation for everyone is as follows.

1- put drywall on the ceiling and walls of your grow room.
Any fire retarded material is recommended.

2- install atleast 2 smoke detectors in your grow room.
Install one directly above your light.
And one at the opening that can easily hear.
And a CO,2 Detector at the opening.

3- do not put panda film near any heat source or possible source of ignition
panda film is flammable and produces toxic smoke it will spread the fire everywhere.

4- do not use wood or any other flammable material to hang or brace anything in your room.

5- install a full size fire extinguisher at the entrance to your room.
Make sure its easily accessible.
Small fire extinguishers are not sufficient.
They discharge in seconds and do not do the job you are expecting.

I CAN NOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH. GET A FULL SIZE EXTINGUISHER!!!!!

6- do not use thin or cheep extention cords.
Get minimum #14 guage extension cords #12 would be better.
Don't cheep out here.

7- if you use a power bar make sure it has a GFI breaker on it.
Don't use cheep or dollar store power bars.
Spend the extra 20 bucks and get a good one.

8- keep your room tidy.
Do not store anything in your that is not needed.
Especially if it is flammable

9- do not overload any circuits.
Make sure you are plugged into a 15 amp breaker.
Do not change breakers to 20 amp.
If you need more power run another dedicated circuit to your room.

Please do not let this happen to you.

Also everyone in Canada.

Since growing is legal here you Must inform your insurance company that you have a grow.
Just because its legal doesn't mean your covered.
You must inform them and fill out a small questionnaire.
There won't be a problem you just have to let them know ahead of time.

Please everyone head my warnings.
Don't let something like this happen to you and destroy your life.
These small measures can mean the difference between cleaning up a mess and loosing your home or worse.

Please be careful and weary of possible problems.
Thank you for reading this and doing what I recommend.
Small measures can mean the difference between life and death.

If anyone has any other recommendations as I am not an expert please share them with us.

Bill

I was sponsored by a company that isn’t with us anymore.
I hung their bran new light and set it on low.
Couple days later the light has a melt down catching on fire.
I had panda film on the walls and a wood ceiling.
Well the rest is there.
Drywall and ceramic tile now in my custom built year round grow facility. VIVOHUT
Away from my house.
I’ll never risk growing inside again.
It was a terrible time in my life I don’t want to repeat.
Rob and everyone here plus my wonderful wife got me through it. :green_heart:
Try and do everything you can to keep safe.
I’m incredibly lucky to get a second chance :passitleft:

Name the light so we don't accidentally purchase one .
Im glad you are all well and survived the ordeal.
Did you know you can have smoke detectors wired with an interlink cable so if the smoke detector at the other end of the house out of ear shot goes off it also triggers the smoke detector at the opposite end of the house making it easy to hear from everywhere.

That’s in our wiring code now.
All smoke detectors must be hard wired with battery back up and integrated.
There is a lot of new stuff in the code.
I haven’t been in the biz since I broke my back in 08.
But.
How about I try this.
They were called Offic1al We£Grow.
But after their stuff started burning everywhere they closed and rebranded as
We£Grow now.
They even have a pic of my grow room on their new website. 🤬
Anyway that’s the name I’ll keep quiet.
Hopefully that doesn’t trigger a note from Teddy. :ciao:

I built custom homes and did most of the trade work.
But plumber & electrician to start and just expanded my business from there.
Power troweling a cement floor the 48” polisher struck in the concrete sending me flying over the footings.
Broke a vertebrae and life changed a little after that. ;)
I built the VIVOHUT and wired it up.
60 amp disconnect into an 8 circuit breaker panel.
14/2/3 BX surface run.
Separate Breaker’s in each room with separate plugs.
Nothing fancy but easy to work on.
No hidden wires or worries about changing as I go.
Triple insulated with a 6” heated cement floor.
Safe and not inside.

Ouch 😳 shit can happen in the blink of an eye .
Floor heating must be nice and toastie they have fuck our power infrastructure over here in Australia with this net zero bullshit, shutting down our coal fired power stations we aren't allowed to use our resources but we are allowed to sell coal to other countries to use . Our power prices keep rising its becoming very expensive for no good reason.
Happy growing stay safe

Steel office cabinets - the way to go for safety, they last forever, and if you stop you can use them for storage.
Steel won't burn - at least not without thermite.

I have been growing in steel office cabinets for 16 years. Mine are 6' X 3' X 18". The light (HPS) is mounted on top and shines thru a hole. It all is under a concrete garage pad, so it is all good. I do have ventilation inside-to-outside and those have a screen coverings. You could mount the light inside the cabinet but you will need extra ventilation. I think this is the way to go when you have a small grow op. I average about 4z's per cabinet 4 times a year. Pretty good.

Hopefully that doesn’t trigger a note from Teddy. :ciao:
I would hope not. They deserve to be called out for that shit.
Using your pictures is pretty low. So was what they offered you for compensation.
Fuck em'. Know it really set you back but glad you managed to get through it and you're back up and running.
Truth of the matter is it could've happened to anyone. Lot of people entered that giveaway too. I did...
It should be an eye opener for others that safety matters and to take extra precaution.
Thanks for taking the time to share your insight and story. Who knows, it might save some lives. 👋

You’re the reason I have a fire extinguisher 🧯 in my room and I also have one in the basement by the furnace and Breaker box 📦. CL🍀

I should change my gfci outlets for arc fault receptacles.
I would leave the GFCI in place and fit smoke detectors.
No point removing one safety feature to try and prevent a different catastrophe why not have both safety features

The thing is I have no water near my outlets so getting electrocuted isn’t something I worry about, now an electrical fire is something I sweat more.

I have smoke detectors. I’d rather prevent a fire than have one and just be alerted.

Im an electrician and I can tell you you don't need water to be electrocuted just ask @NickHardy , he recently got electrocuted.
I stand by my original comment 😊
:passitleft:

Water is helpful in getting electrocuted in some instances but by no means essential.

That was 220v in my hand last week and could have been much worse.

We have all our wall sockets fitted above the height of the lights, separated circuits and control boxes for lights and pumps. I got electrocuted by a $5 grow light bought from a big box store.

I don’t recommend it.

Brilliant idea my friend thank you.
If you get a chance can you post a pics so we can see it.
Might help to see it.
It’ll give everyone a better idea of the setup.
Thanks again take care.

Good morning @Regrowth hope everything is good with you.
My apologies for not answering sooner.
Can’t keep track of my own threads.
If I say the name it triggers a note because they don’t want to advertise their name.
So I put numbers in the middle.
It’s unsearchable that way.but I thought I had the name in the beginning.
It’s entirely my fault though.
Except the light exploding.
I had a wood ceiling and white plastic on the walls.
All flammable materials.
Anything flammable in the room is a danger.
Although it could happen to anyone being setup safely and having smoke detectors and fire extinguishers is paramount.
Be prepared and rig your setup with non flammable materials where possible is going save lives for sure.
I know @NickHardy changed his setup because of this thread, probably saved his family.
So I know it’s helping others.
We all survived thankfully and now I’m just trying to help others avoid the same fate.
Been a long road back to growing but we made it.
Thanks for dropping in my friend.
Take care.
