First Time Grow: White Widow

Day 157: I think the upward and outward growth has completely stopped now. The tallest plant is 8’10” tall. I’m sure they’re all now into the flowering stage. I’ve upped the dose of the nutes by the recommended dose on the bottle but am almost out now. Will probably only have one more feed. I have used my nutrients sporadically, not really sticking to a schedule, just feeding them whenever I feel like it.

Day 174: definitely in the flowering stage now! Some nice buds starting to form.

One plant is displaying some odd symptoms and has been for more than a week. It is the one I previously topped, the right hand branch has some discolouration to some of the fan leave, but only at the very top of the plant. I don’t plan to try and correct this, I’m just going to monitor and see what happens. Everything else seems to be in good order. The far left plant seems to be developing buds more quickly, I figure this is due to it growing in the shadow of the other plants. Hopefully I’ll have an early harvest on that one!

Day 192: I have decided to number the plants 1-4 from left to right to make explanations easier.

Plant 4 is yellowing very quickly, this is confined to the larger fan leaves early so I’m not worried. I will continue to monitor.

Plant 3 is getting heavy at the top and requires ropes to help it stand up straight. This is still difficult to achieve.

Plant 2 has started yellowing with the others but looks fine.

Plant 1 I believe is more developed than the other three, I’m hoping to harvest this a week earlier than the others. This girl has the best structure than any of the others, but is also the smallest.

Day 202: Yesterday I discovered the very top buds of girl number 4 were rotten. I believe this is due to me leaving dead leaves attached to the plant. I only lost a small portion of the buds but it also forced a small harvest of this plant. I have removed all dead and yellowing leaves and will continue to remove fan leaves over the coming days.

The temperature is dropping here now and I’m growing concerned that an unpredicted frost will damage my plants. I will monitor closely.

Other three plants look healthy and trichomes are looking half cloudy. Hoping I can hold off the remaining harvest until they’re more developed.

Day 203: On closer inspection, all plants were ready for harvest. Trichomes we’re looking very cloudy all around, 50-60% of pistils had darkened and I was observing some trichomes even having amber tops. Final harvest has been completed and only now am I realising how mic work is involved in trimming.

I have hung plants in my basement and shed to begin drying and over this week I will be trimming the larger fan leaves from each branch. Once these are all removed I will begin trimming the smaller sugar leaves.

Note for next year: Try to plan one week before harvest and begin removing fan leaves then!

It looks like a good yield! I will report more on that once it is dried. I’m hoping that I’ve done everything right to improve the smoke, aroma and potency!

Plant 4 smells like shit! I think it should have been harvested earlier. I think the leaves yellowing quickly was a major factor in the lack of aroma in the buds.
So far harvested girl number 3, total take was 539g.
The buds are now curing. Not sure whether they were harvested a little dry.... will leave for 24hrs and then burp the jars.

edit: Girl 3 has a sweet scent to it and some nice fat buds. Can’t wait to try this one! Looking forward to trimming #1 tomorrow as well!

This really is more work that I imagined! I am never growing this much again....

So, three of the girls are finally finished and curing (plants 1, 2 and 3). These all smell great! I even trimmed up a dry bud from number 1 and smoked it last night, it definitely had the desired effect and smoked very nicely!

I have recalculated total yields today.

1) 237g (This is the sweetest smelling)
2) 510g
3) 495g

So far from girl number 4 I’ve collected 197g. There’s still a LOT more left to harvest. I’m not going to be too particular with trimming the rest of this plant as I’m going to use it to make bubble hash. I would really love to know what exactly went so horribly wrong with this plant.... it really is a shame as it will easily have the biggest yield

Overall I’ve collected 50-100 seeds, need to check which of these are viable though.

This has been a great learning experience. Next season I will only be growing two plants indoors and one outdoors (luckily I have the seeds to do so!).

image.jpg

Final count 2083g! Of that, 841g plus trimmings went in to make bubble hash. Bubble hash is drying but current weight is around 245g.

Very happy with total yield! Looking forward to next season, bigger and better!

Thanks Amadeus! It has been great fun writing about this grow and will serve as a good reference for grows that follow. Definitely think I can improve yields and bud quality next time around.

I will be sure to post my smoke report, although I really need to try it again as I don’t recall much from the cannon that me and my friends got through... watch this space!

all the best!
