Hello everyone. I figure, what better way to learn from my first grow failures and successes than to start a grow journal. I have read lots and lots way before I ever ventured into this my first grow attempt, not to mention it is nice to finally be legal to grow my own medicine.

I appreciate all constructive critism and can't wait to see how this all turns out and I am excited to learn from the vast array of knowledgeable people on here. Will do my best to post the needed informaiton for all to assit me throughout the grow. Thanks 420 for the great journal template!

Very interested to see how this turns out. I am also growing there candy cane :) I use the same lighting type footprints so you should get a good yield :)

Hi SlantEye, that is good to know and I look forward to exchanging grow results as we move forward. If you get a chance I would like to see some pics of your grow and set up. I have lots of questions and I will post more about my grow prior to the start of this thread tonight.

Additional information on my grow so far as I recall it,

-10 Seeds put into water for 24 hours(6.5ph) than paper towel, kept in a dark place at 23C, small tap root showed just over 48 hours.
-Planted in 4 gallon pots immediately(soil drenched - November 1, 2016), filled with 3 gallons of soil, read this is best volume for autos.
-No ferts for 2.5 weeks and foilage spray daily to keep moist.
- 2 x 500 W HPS lights (50% light settings) and 20 x4 light cycle.
-Around 3 weeks (November 19, 2016) first ferts (20x20x20 MG) used, placed ferts on top of soil around plant and watered until 20% run off + room temperature tap water (around 7.4ph was used).
- November 26, 2016 used 1/4 scoop MG and wattered until until 20% run off.
- December 3, 2016 4 gallons of tap water used per plant and 1/4 scoop of MG after this mild flush.
- Used spray bottle with water and molasses to spray bottom of the plants often to feed lady bugs.
- Will water and fertlize again this weekend.

Lower Leaf Burn On Most plants - Day 44

If someone could chime in and let me know what they think of the leaf burn I would appreciate it. The burn is only on the lower leafs and the rest of the plant looks real healthy. I checked for bad bugs and the leaves are clean other than my lady bugs.

I think it may be two many nutes not sure. Thinking back I fertilized the plants like 3 times already with 20 20 20 miracle grow, about a 1/4 scoop each time. Also should I just remove the bad leaves as they are all on hte bottom only and the leaves are very thick on the bottom of the plant.

Also a little concerned about the lateness of the Candy Cane showing flowers - some white hairs only ot date.

Thanks
GM

To me being the older fan leaves I would suspect early stage nitrogen deficiency. Any of the fan leaves stems going red at all?

Yes I did notice a couple that were red. Early stage nitrogen deficiency interesting, I was scared to hit them to with too much nitorgen.

About 44 day in now. I will trim the bad leaves and try a nitrogen boost on a couple to see how that turns out. The thing is all the top leaves look very healthy and the overall plants look strong.

GM

My candy canes did the exact same thing. Around day 35 the older leaves started turning yellow, then parts would turn brown and fall apart. I had it along with red stems. I honestly just its a product of the lower fan leaves just running out of nutes to feed the plants. Cut off any problem leaves and monitor the new growth. I doubt you have anything to worry about. Most likely some sort of deficiency. Mine showed pre flower at 3 weeks. Around four they flowered. Both plants are growing at different paces. So many factors go into how the plants do. I'm sure you're start to see little buds any day now. I was scared when mine started, I thought it was too soon :p

@ Nuckscelts, You may be right about nute deficientcy and to all the rest who are following this, an update to my address of leaf challenge.

I cut off all bad leaves (lower soil touching leaves) and than flushed a 2:1 volume of water 7.4PH (tap), lots of run off. Also as part of the experient I went the other way, I hit two plants with 20x20x20(half scoop) with a gallon of water.

All plants look good but the ones with a MG(20X20X20) hit are looking better and with no burn(2 days). I have drowned all the plants so I need to wait 3 days before I water again and or contimplate nutes dosage.

After talking to some locals, I may have created hot spots with my dumb watering method, dumping fertilizer on the top of soil and adding water later. Flower way late t0 CKS statement but I new just learning1

thoughts?

so on Day 49 from seed, the Candy Cane has gone into flower and has streched to around three feet. Leaves seem to have recovered nicely after the flush/bottom trim and I have now switched to a 1/4 scoop of 15-30-15 MG for today's 2 gallons of water per pot watering. Not sure about the whole auto ability of the Candy Cane as a green crack and a Purple Kush plant that I started at the same time as the Canady Cane are now in flower after 2 weeks of a 12-12 light cycle.

Can not wait to see how it all turns out!

Grow Room Lux Lumen tests:

Hi all, I decided to have some fun with my Lumen tester today and see how the HPS lights perform with no hoods and hanging loose; this is a good way to control heat, but as you will see from below not so great for light penetration. The Led light test results where somewhat impressive.

Check out the results below and feel free to share your thoughts!

Grow Room Lux Lumen tests:

A Lux is a uniform standard by which the amount of visible light present in a given space can be described. A Lumen is a measure of just how much visible light is produced by an object such as, a grow light bulb.

Using:
Dr.Meter LX1010BS with LCD display Digital Illuminance/Light Meter 0 - 100,000 Lux Luxmeter.
1 Foot Candle/Lumens = 10.76 Luxes and 1 Lux =.093 Foot Candles or Lumens. The meter was set on 100,000 for all tests, so whatever the reading I got was times 100 to convert reading to Lumens (close enough anyway).

I tested both the flower room that is running a 400W MH Bulb in a 6x6X8 foot space and the main grow room that is running 4, 1000W HPS Bulbs and hanging without a hood in a 16X20X8 grow room and finally the 2 BOSSLED 1000W Double Chips (2pcs 5w) LED Grow Light Full Spectrum for Greenhouse and Indoor Plant Flowering Growing (10w Leds). Note: all rooms are covered in Mylar.

Flower Room (1x 400W MH):
 1 foot beside - 240x100 = 24,000 Lumens
 4 feet beside - 53x100 = 5,300 Lumens
 1 foot below - 70x100 = 7,000 Lumens
 Middle of plant (lots cover) - 16x100 = 1,600 Lumens
 At soil by stem (lots cover) - 4x 100 = 400 Lumens
 At ceiling - 40x100 = 4,000 Lumens

Grow Room (4x 1000W HPS):
 1 foot beside - 500x100 = 50,000 Lumens
 4 feet beside open - 160x100 = 16,000 Lumens
 1 foot below - 210x100 = 21,000 Lumens
 Middle of plant (lots cover) - 25x100 = 2,500 Lumens
 At soil by stem (lots cover) - 10x 100 = 1,000 Lumens
 At ceiling - 50x100 = 5,000 Lumens

Grow Room (2 LED 1000W Grow Light):
 1 foot beside - 70x100 = 7,000 Lumens
 4 feet beside open - 1600 = 16,000 Lumens
 1 foot below - 340x100 = 34,000 Lumens
 Middle of plant (lots cover) - 45x100 = 4,500 Lumens
 At soil by stem (lots cover) - 40x 100 = 4,000 Lumens (5 feet from light)
 At ceiling - 46x100 = 4,600 Lumens

The above results are of course not perfect as the Led Lights test in particular was influenced by the HPS lights to some degree and depending on how much plant cover was present the readings at soil and the middle of the plant varied substantially, in some cases.

A couple of things I did notice though are that the penetration of the 1000W HPS lights was a lot less than I suspected. They are hung loose with no hood and this allows for the leaching of light throughout the whole grow room but unless the light is hung directly beside the plants it will not be near as effective as using a hood. If I went with a hood I would have a temperature control problem so I will have to look at better HPS penetration and cooling options in the future.

Secondly, the 2 LED 1000W Full Spectrum Grow Lights hung directly above the Purple Kush seem to have very good penetration power. In particular I was impressed with this test, “At soil by stem (lots cover) - 40x 100 = 4,000 Lumens (5 feet from light).

Happy growing all!
