My First Indoor Grow 2400w HPS Soil Medium - Advice Welcome

Re: My First Indoor Grow 2400w HPS Soil Medium- Advice sought

You can whip one up pretty easy, the one I use now is getting ready to grow two plants to finish.....started and finished in the same rig with minor conversions.

I like the sound of that as id prefer not transplanting at all if possible just for the slowdown alone. That method should work especially well for autos as i think they really need the best start possible.

My aim is to develop a system that's self contained, a person has one unit to deal with, it all fits within itself for shipping and storage. nutes, light, instructions....everything in a box. Hopefully this would encourage a person looking to start up slow, try their hand at growing, and see if it's something they want to go into further, and it will be a complimentary piece of equipment for anyone already growing just for the cloning capability. You could also build the system as you went, adding features as required for your specific applications. 12-24 clone capability, 2-4 plant growing.

Hey Dasher, lots of activity since I was here!

Sorry I haven't been around. Slammed with work and started harvesting last week.

I don't like to spray clones if I can avoid it. I will usually mist with water once or twice the first couple days, but I'm not sure it helps. I would never foliar feed an unrooted clone. This does not encourage it to grow roots. It can get what it needs by cannibalizing the lower leaves. When I clone in plugs, I can tell when the thing is finally rooting because the leaves will finally start to yellow. I do like the aero cloner I built a lot. I think it's the best way to do clones for me. If I was in soil or soiless though, I would use rapid rooters. So in other words... I don't spray anything on the clones as it minimizes their need to create roots and sustain itself. If they were looking wilted I would spray them, but this last batch didn't wilt at all. I did mist them with water the first night and the next morning, but they never looked like they needed it, and I think I've misted them one other time since then.

I'm glad to see you're keeping your journal. You're looking at it all wrong. You don't have to bring your own prior knowledge and experience to a journal. That's not usually the point. The point of a journal is to chronicle your journey during a grow. We ALL learn things during a grow. I don't care if you've been growing 50 years, you will learn something every single time. When this grow is finished, and you look back at your journal, you will see how much great information is contained within it. The best part is, it will follow along as you learn all these things and make it even easy for other new growers. They will probably have the same questions as you and will benefit from your experience. Not the experience you brought before the journal, but the experience your recording in the journal. Does that make sense? All this learning and questioning is what makes the journal valuable!

Anyway, this is a fantastic community. I'm sure your grow is gonna be successful with all the help you will find here. I'll try to stay caught up, but I have a busy few weeks ahead.

Keep 'em green

hey there brother!

great to see a fellow k1w1 at 420! :cheesygrinsmiley:

set up is looking great, yep- as advised, glossy white isnt the best as it can also create 'hotspots' in the reflective areas where matt white wont and as lurch mentioned panda film is good too.. i have used it on floors too as its waterproof, you can get that around the north island from various grow stores., SOG i think sells it- although trademe might produce cheaper options for that and mylar etc.. but white paint is pretty easy to get for next to nothing ;] matt white, panda, mylar, silver sided building paper etc.. all work but basically comes back to what you wanna spend.. and as you've mentioned- diy/cheaper, at this stage, is better :]

when i take cuttings bro, i take em JUST BELOW the third set of nodes- as the nodes are areas on the plant that are designed genetically to GROW, it makes sense to cut em below so as to inspire rooted growth from the same sites... i trim them with a razor an inch from the cut(at 45 degree angle-as you know this increases the surface area for potential root growth)so that the area is smooth as a babies bottom- i dip them in water( i dont use rooting hormone anymore.. cause im a lazy fart loL), place them in the jiffies and tuck them in very tightly so there is no air getting down into the jiffy and that they wont shake around if im moving the unit.. i put em in a deep plastic tub/vessel and throw a yellow pak n slave plastic bag over em... 7-10 days i get roots. there hasnt been many times when i lose a single cutting- generally 100% success.. KISS!. hiker is spot on imho about the yellowing of the clone leaf/leaves and about misting often with nutes or even water.. you wanna keep em moist the first few days and slowly let em dry JUST A LITTLE.. this aids in promoting water seeking roots to develop and shoot out far more quickly than if you were misting everyday- JUST MY OPINION THO! ;]

a northlander hey! i recall when the kiwiseeds lads came down and started working around herre.. they were bringing some massive gear through at that time.. and i see they have a classic northland strain, "2 pounder" on their list of beans :cheesygrinsmiley: ive been wanting to try their mako haze for sometime.. but therre are just so many beautiful strains to try! decisions decisions :scratchinghead::blalol:

i was talking to a local sog store owner and he was saying that the owners of the company are looking at 7 years jail time OR the crown has offered them the option of giving their shops up- including their source suppliers! so its not looking good on that front at the mo! *fingers crossed* as i dont wanna pay extra for shipping costs from stores further afield :/ who does tho!

and yeah man! dont forgo you journal! :cheesygrinsmiley: as mentioned above its a great means to look back over our grows.. see how they have grown, successes and or failures, how and where to improve on things, excellent to look back on different strains and check out how they grew, with what nutes and dif techniques of growing, training and pruning etc.. invaluable information! and a great way to learn as it keeps you active in participating and keeps a dialogue open with other growers.. and there are some wicked growers here :cheesygrinsmiley:

im subbed brother, can hardly wait to see your indo garden blooming and dripping with trichs :thumb:

I like it the adaptability of the unit and selling the full grows a great idea, with premixed ferts and a simple schedule theres no reason folks wouldn't get great results first time. You gained the expertise the kits a great way to make it pay. Im sold lol put me down for one to start with.

Nah man dont say sorry Hiker, i see how much you put in around the site im honored you show an interest and make the time to support my journal. Your information on clone roots i makes sense as mine seem quite happy just to sit in the box looking great being folia fed but not really in a hurry to root. I did read somewhere that they feed off the bottom leaves and to expect them to yellow and die i thought mine where just going better ha ha i now know better. Thanks for your thoughts regarding the journal your words give me some perspective on the issue as ive been having bit of a wobble over its validity but all good now, the level of support and reassurance ive recieved from you and the community has dispelled any reservations of continuing on what im enjoying doing. The bud porn going on over in your journal at the moments awesome, wish i had those nuggets hanging in my shed. Great grow :goodjob: looking forward to your unlocking to the secret of "cannasyrup" lol

Re: My First Indoor Grow 2400w HPS Soil Medium- Advice sought

i usually spray mine once or twice a day... just plain water. til they show roots then i stop and spray the area around them. i dont think it discourages root growth at all in my opinion... but strains also differ.
i think i should have started spraying around the area like that as well now. mine are taking ages.

Cherr :high-five: bro, Kia Ora. Was wondering exactly what the benefit of matt over sheen, i was thinking of the reflective angles of matt as being the advantage kinda right just backwards. Im not really up on hot spots but im learning fast.
Shot on your clone box design i have plenty of lids in my drawer lol, without cloning gel too i like that not because im lazy but beacause im cheap. I have to give my mates DIY back so think ill be using your design in the future. I do like the look of aerocloners tho so if you get any easy DIY ideas on them be sure to let me know. Im definitely going stop misting my clones after a couple of days im sure the theories sound about the root growth without it.

Yeah there looking down the barrel at sog alright 7 years jail or give it away and narc, great choice.

Kiwiseeds got some bad looking strains alright id luv to give em a go one day as there "ours" and i like the idea of growing 2 Pounder being a local and all. Im proud they're out there developing strains and getting good results against the big boys.

Thanks for your interest and advice bro im determined to get a decent grow going and feel im at the right place to make it happen for me, i can see all the bud hanging up already my jobs with your guys helps to put the pieces in place and let it happen.

cher bro! ;]
well.. i dunno if i would call my clone box a "clone box" :p lOL its more a tupperware container with a plastic bag over it hahaha  ive made aero cloners before and THEY ROCK but the ole 'plastic tub-n-bag' hasnt failed me yet... cloners are very easy-plenty of info around on how to make em CHEAP.. just need a water pump really and access to a bit of pvc piping/plumbing from mitre10 to make a basic manifold and a few misters/sprinklers OR simply use some irrigation tubing(instead of pvc) to connect to the water pump. if you ever go that way there is a guy on trademe that sells decent water pumps/motors etc(esp good for hydro if you decide to go that way) for CHEAP, lemme know if you want his details and i'll PM them to ya. the 5000L/h water pump im currently using cost me 100bux as opposed to sog's 480bux for a water pump with slightly less capacity! amazing shit.
yeah man, not looking good AT THE MO for the sog owners.. i feel for ma mate who runs the local... could be out of a job.. family to support, kids to feed n all- hoping things turn out for them.. but im sure another supplier will take over where they left off.. not a helluva lot available herre in that respect.. in my neck of the woods there arent any other options- if they shut down it'll be ordering from the west coast or wellies or even OZ.
tu meke brother, good to see ya here :cheesygrinsmiley:

take it easy bro :peace:

OH, before i scaddadle.. you might need to put your link in your signature between tags.. so that when you scroll over it it'll link to this journal.. basically, just copy and paste the link you have added into the "link" field.. its that icon that looks like the planet earth with a little figure 8 at the bottom of it.. next to the smiley emoticon in the tool bar above.. but do it in the settings page :cheesygrinsmiley: u can add other things too and change the size, colour etc there too if you so desire.. it took me a while to figure it out honestly as im such a noob with stuff like that loL. cher bro

dont knock your DIY "clone box" bro i can pick up a cardboard box and a bag for nothing at pac'n'save. seems alot of trouble all the pumps and stuff just to root clones so dont think id go an aerocloner unless i was growing autos for that nice healthy start. May as well just make it bigger lose the lid and call it a full grow unit. mcloadie got a set up like that without the transplant they dont slow at all, it certainly gives the best start. you know amazes me how much they can mark up in specialty shops but i suppose they just making a living and its probably your own fault if you go spending $400 on anything without checking it out. Bummed for your sog mate and his family itd be a horrible situation to be in. Im not hydro and just use basic nutes from the local shops so im not that reliant on sog i should be able to get my budzilla online thats about all id regulaly use them for.

thanks for the link info should be able to do that ok... i think. ill check out the grow room, have a joint and a stare first and hook it up.

Ive turned my ensuite into a veg room for now, i need one and luckily i can, got to get a tent very soon. The clones have been transplanted into potting mix and pb8's, only got a 600watt hps with no digital ballast, a few look pretty droopy but most not that bad. Ive got my light 6 feet from the tops and i cant go any higher. I was wondering if the lights still too intense or wether just a few will wilt like that when transplanted ? any advice is gladly received :Namaste:

Thanks again for link advice Alkhemist :thanks:

Re: My First Indoor Grow 2400w HPS Soil Medium- Advice sought

hey bro, ime some will wilt a little when transplanted, also depending on how strong the root structure was when transplanting...the light should be fine, 6 feet sounds more than adequate bro.. what you COULD try for the ones that are drooping and looking a little bad is place a plastic bag(clear, opaque or even yellow will be fine at this early stage) over them to increase humidity for them again.. or some kind of makeshift humidity tent or dome. they may be sensitive to coming from the high levels of humidity whilst in the cloner and misted to being planted and exposed to the dryer ambient air.. this is just a thought though- others may know the solution. i am certain this should perk them up though.. and once perked up you can take the bag off- a day or two max i reckon... by that time they would have settled into their root system more and should be strong enough to take the transition.. my 2 cents worth brother :cheesygrinsmiley:

best of luck! :peace: :ganjamon:
