Hi Guys -
This journal was almost an addendum to my other current journal, but it was already so complicated I decided to do a separate one for this plant alone. Not too exciting, a journal about one autoflower, perhaps. Or perhaps not. We'll see what we can do to spice it up a bit. So here's the skinny:
Strain: Humboldt Seed Company Sour Apple Feminized Autoflower.
Genetics: Magic Melon x Humboldt Sour Diesel x Ruderalis. Here's what the HSC website has to say about the strain:
SOUR APPLE AUTOFLOWER
ORIGINAL STRAIN
MAGIC MELON x HUMBOLDT SOUR DIESEL x RUDERALIS
SATIVA | AVG. THC 20-24% | MINOR VARIATION | FROSTY AND DENSE
APPLE | GAS
Sour Apple is a crossbreed to auto project that combines classic fuel terp/high THC strains with the fruity terps and amazing vigor of the Magic Melon Auto. In 2019 we isolated high THC phenos of the Humboldt Sour Diesel and then bred them with seed from the plants testing over 20% THC. With dense buds that have an attractive purple and green mottling and sugar-coated frost, this is worthy of the top shelf anywhere.
FLOWERING TIME 75-90 Days From Germination
STRAIN BENEFITS
Sativa
Apples, Gas
Average THC 20%-24%
Frosty and dense nugs
Number of Plants: ONE
Soil:
- Starter pot, 40% Fox Farms Happy Frog, 40% Fox Farms Ocean Forest, 20% Mother Earth perlite #3
- Final pot, 70% Fox Farms Ocean Forest, 30% Mother Earth perlite #3
Pots:
- Stater pot is a sour cream container that I poked many many holes in all around and on the bottom to simulate an airpot
- Final pot is a 5 gallon fabric pot
Lights:
- (2) 29-watt full spectrum UFO led panels
- (1) Natural Sun at 93,000,000 miles above canopy
- (1) Non sponsored 1000 watt full spectrum quantum board/(2) Non sponsored 1200 watt blurples
Tent (when used): Topolite 5 x 5 x 6'11" equipped with the quantum board and blurples
Environmental Tent Controls for tent use indoor hours sunset to sunrise:
- 8000 btu AC unit for cold air intake
- Additional 5000 btu AC unit for cold air intake
- 6" AC Infinity 8 speed exhaust fan
- 6" Carbon Filter w/Australian charcoal
- 5 fans of various sizes and placement possibilities
- Dehumidifier
- Humidifier
Environmental Outdoor Controls for outdoor hours 6 am to 8 pm: None
Environmental Controls in Bathroom For Early Veg up until transplant: Temp and humidity will be that of inside the house, ie, 76 - 78 degrees and around 60% humidity. I can bring a humidifier into the bathroom to increase humidity during seedling stage.
Nutes: Fox Farms trio of Big Bloom, Grow Big, and Tiger Bloom. Non sponsored mycorrhizae. Organic unsulphured blackstrap molasses. Humboldt's Secret Cal Mag plus Iron. Silica.
Alright, so I learned many things growing autos in the journal currently going. Still am. But I have learned enough to know a couple things. I have ten HSC Sour Apple seeds. My ultimate goal is to grow a whole tent of them. I LST'ed every plant hard in my current (and first) autoflower grow. I don't know if a plant is going to yield better if just let to go, with just the branches pulled out. No topping. No LST. Just let the plant grow close to completely naturally. In terms of training, that's the plan with this plant. Basically ZERO training. That way I will have had the experience of LST'ing several strains of auto and be able to compare it to a plant that is just let to go. It will also allow me to see just how big the Sour Apple can get if left to her own devices. I already know I can keep it short if I want to. This way, when I next go on to a whole tent of Sour Apple, this experience will help me a ton to decide how to grow them and how many. I also learned that three gallon pots are not really big enough to grow a really big auto. My current autos are in three gallon pots, and every single plant has a root ball that completely fills the pot. There's no place for them to go, and it's been like that a while. Which obviously limits the size of the plant and the yield. So this Sour Apple will go from the large sour cream container starter pot to a five gallon fabric pot. One transplant, thus the selection of a larger pot than a Dixie Cup to begin with.
Regarding how this plant will grow in what light...
- First two or three weeks of growth will take place right where she is in the photograph - my bathtub. Under the UFO panels. 20/4 light cycle. The par at soil level in the picture is 320 par. It goes up to about 440 right at the light. Plenty of light for early veg and very easy to control the environment.
- Once she outgrows that pot, she will get transplanted to a five gallon pot and at that point her light cycle will change. Once in her five, she will go outside and grow in the natural sunlight from about 6 am til about 8 pm. The autos already proved to me that they can easily take the summer weather here, ie, mid 90's by day during their outdoor hours. That will cover 14 hours of light a day.
- At 8 pm she will come inside and go into the tent under the quantum board and blurples. She'll live in there with 6 more hours of LED lighting, bringing her total hours of light per day to 20. and spend the dark hours in the tent.
- This sunlight/LED daily cycle (14 hours sun/6 hours LED) will continue through harvest.
I have found on my current grow that the autos FAR FAR prefer natural sunlight to any light they could possibly be provided in a tent. The ones I am growing now hit a new gear when they started spending their days in the sunlight. The resin production is WAY enhanced. The growth is faster. The plants respond better and the pots dry more evenly in a more consistent timeframe. There's no downside and no comparison imho. Except you can't give them 20 hours of sun per day. And if you just go 14/10 using ONLY the sun, that's a lot of wasted time that the autos would be dark when they could be producing. Thus, the idea to go back and forth. So we'll see how it goes.
Day One will be the day the seed sprouts. I put the seed in paper towels two days ago, no soaking first, and in 48 hours it popped and sprouted a 3/4" tap root. Into the dirt she went.
So there we are. Welcome to a rather odd one plant grow journal. Commentary is always encouraged, desired, and appreciated, as are questions, criticisms, suggestions for different courses of action, or plain old atta-boys. Lol. In the picture she is sharing space for a few days with the Lemon Autos from my current grow who live in the bathtub overnight now.
Thanks for stopping by.
Hi guys - obviously I tagged y'all for this.
